# Bridges# Bridge is not just a mere construction over water bodies but a generalized concept of crossing over an obstacle. Basic Types of Bridges are: 1. Beam Bridge (most basic): is supported at both ends. 2. Arch bridge: Arch shaped bridges supported by the bases of both ends of Arch. 3. Suspension bridge: The load of bridge is supported by the tension of the bridge carriers. Inca Civilization behind Andes mountains of South America is the first to have used Rope Bridges. (Cow boy movies) Mouryans were the first to construct Bridges across rivers and Kautilya's Arthashastra mentions few. Mythological (?) bridge between Dhanushkodi (India) and Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) is referred in Ramayana. Above basic bridges are modernized and gave rise to contemporary Cantilever bridges, Cable-stayed bridges (Sutong Bridge over YangTze river of China) and Tried bridges etc.
