Indicators of justice In any society, there are some fixed indicators by which we can judge if the society is just or not These are common to all kinds of societies, and must be taken seriously
1.Stark income differences We know by now that justice does not require absolute equality However, it does not mean that we foster inequalities in the name of justice Inequalities exist, but they should not be startk inequalities Everyone should get their due
e Imagine there are 2 colleges, with 1o students each
Students of college A get a placement of 1 Lakh per annum Students of college B get a placement of 1o Lakh per month This case is a clear example of injustice Such start injustice has to be kept in che and its reasons have to be identified
. Chance to the deprived sectio to improve their condition Even if a country has clear social injustice in the form of income inequality, it can move towards social ustice For that, it has to ensure that the deprived sections of the society get a fair chance to improve their condition Every society must be given a chance to become fair and just This is a step in that direction
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is one of the finest examples of this indicator of justice It provides for 100 days of guaranteed employment to the youth of the country So, if the youth are getting the chance of developing and coming out of poverty and they make good use of it, society can move towards equality and justice
Tribals Struggle In Tripura, Once Best Performer In MNREGA Implementation While the blame game continues between the leaders of Biplab Deb government and the Left on MNREGA work allocation, poor tribals continue to suffer.
3. Minimum conditions for a dignified life If in a society people do not even have basiC facilities like food ater, shelter and clothes, they cannot think about growing in life In the absence of basic amenities like these, people end up resorting to unfair means like STEALING and even MURDER So, the society has to ensure that it does not let its citizens suffer from the absence of basic needs Abraham Maslow has given a very apt theory in this regard
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Self-actualization Esteem Love/Belonging Safety Physiological verywell
e In India, minimum calorie requirements for people have been fixed as follows: 2100 calories per day for people living in urban areas V2400 calories per day for people living in rural areas
India is no longer home to the largest number of poor people in the world. Nigeria is.
There can be other ways of assessing the people and their condition in a society too!
A Just society is that society in which ascending sense of reverence and descending sense of contempt is dissolved into the creation of a compassionate society" DI. B.R. Ambedkar
