  1. What is Biomagnification?

  2. Pollution has been a major concern for humanity for over the past few decades.

  3. Biomagnification is the increasing concentration of a substance, such as a toxic chemical in the tissues of organisms at the higher levels in a food chain , also called bioamplification or biological magnification,

  4. What causes Biomagnification? 1. When the substance cannot be broken down by environmental processes, the toxicity levels keep accumulating in the body of the organism. 2. When the concentration of toxicity increases progressively as it moves up a food chain 3. Low or non-existent rate of internal degradation or excretion of the toxic substance. This occurs due t water insolubility. 4010 160/0

  5. Biological magnification often refers to the process whereby certain substances such as pesticides or heavy metals work their way into lakes, rivers and the ocean, and then move up the food chain in progressively greater concentrations as they are consumed by aquatic organisms such as zooplankton, which in turn are eaten by fish, which then may be eaten by bigger fish, large birds, animals, or humans.

  6. Biomagnification The substances become increasingly Humans concentrated in tissues or internal organs as they move up the chain. Fish eating nsect fish eating Algae Insect fish eating insects Bioaccumulants are substances that increase in concentration in living organisms as they take in contaminated air, water, or food because the substances are very slowly metabolized or excreted. eating insects Algae Water Mercury concentration

  7. Bioaccumulation occurs within a trophic level, and is the increase in the concentration of a substance in certain tissues of organisms bodies due to absorption from food and the environment. Tier 3: Humans, Barracuda and other predatory fish. Cephalopods, etc. Tier 2: Grazers, coral feeders, turtles, etc. Tier 1: Planktonic feeders, hotosynthetic organisms, corals

  8. Bioconcentration is defined as occurring when uptake from the water is greater than excretion. Main AMI storage AMI metabolites excretion High dose dose Amitriptyline AMI) AMI AMI uptake AMI and distribution Img Source: Pinterest

  9. Cormorant 9,500 DDT Kapenta 1,600 DDT is thought to biomagnify and biomagnification is one of the most significant reasons it was deemed harmful to the environment by the EPA and other organizations. Tigerfish 5,000 2500 (39) Water <0.02 Tilapia rendalli 1,900 DDT is stored in the fat of animals and takes many years to break down, and as the fat is consumed by predators, the amounts of DDT biomagnify. DDT is now a banned substance in many parts of the world. Crocodile 34,200 Corbicula africana 10,100 Sediment (390) Labeo altivelis 5,700 -DDT
