  3. Page-7:Nationwide progra m me to test all TB patients . September onwards, health authorities will commence a nationwide programme to test every tuberculosis (TB) patient for signs of resistance to first-line drugs. . The new policy, called the Universal Drug Sensitivity Test, will be implemented using a molecular diagnostic test-GeneXpert, a Us-developed technology tool being used worldwide since 2010 Advantages of New Technology: It can detect the TB bacterium as well check for resistance to rifampicin, one of the standard key TB drugs, within 90 minutes. -Conventional tests take at least a day or more and require well-trained personnel for similar results. Benefits of Universal Testing: il Rapid Diagnosis: An inability to rapidly diagnose multi-drug resistant tuberculosis has long been identified as among the chinks in India's strategy to eliminate tuberculosis. [ii] A Realistic assessment on the scale of resistance to commonly-available TB drugs, [iii] Reveal the large number of hidden tuberculosis patients, [iv] Reveal the HIV- TB Co-infection: Numbers of those with multiple infections of TB and HIV

  4. .Geographical Coverage: States that will first see this policy being implemented include Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand. These, however, are not the States with the highest tuberculosis burden. . Obstacles on the Path to rolling out: I. There are only around 600 GeneXpert devices now in use roughly one for each district 2. GeneXpert kits are also known to be expensive, as well as requiring air-conditioned settings and reliable electricity access for optimal output. Finding the Alternatives: Truenat MTB' The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is in the process of testing a cheaper alternative to GeneXpert called Truenat MTB, which is reportedly more portable, battery-operated, and performs as well at lower costs.

  5. . Statistics Even as India tops the world in the number of tuberculosis cases, the WHO estimates that possibly as many as a million Indians with TB could be outside government scrutiny. In 2015 alone, nine million Indians were tested for suspected tuberculosis and about 900,000 were confirmed to be ailing from it. Nearly 3% of new TB cases and 18% of prevalent cases are believed to be drug resistant, though independent analyses peg these numbers as much higher. The WHO's TB statistics for India for 2015-the latest available -gives an estimated incidence figure of 2.2 million cases of TB for India out of a global incidence of 9.6 million.

  6. Page-ll: Indian elephantgettingbigger'L G.S.-2: India-Australia Relations] The Special envoy of New South Wales, the southeastern Australian state, to India, said that India's rise is good news for Australia as well as the Indian Ocean region. A business delegation from NSW accompanied Mr. O'Farrell seeking business partnerships with Indian entities. NSW has has established sisterly relationship with two Indian states-Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 20 years, India will be one of the major geopolitical players in Asia, providing some balance to the existing power equations in the region. India-Australia trade: stands at $ 141 billion, but it is largely skewed towards Australia. In 2016, India's exports to the country stood at 2.9 billion, while India imported goods worth 11.15 billion from Australia.

  7. Reason for Trade imbalance:There are some structural issues. Australia is a big country with a small population. Australia's consumption is smaller. Prospective sectors for Partnership:These include defence, education, agriculture & tourism Indian Diaspora in Australia: At present there are around 15,000 Indian students in Australia Tourism is also a thrust area. In 2016, 259,900 Indian travelers visited Australia. On defence, Australia has identified India as a key partner to maintain stability and rule-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region Australia's position on the recent India-China border tensions over Doklam in the Himalayan region, Mr. O'Farrell said he could not speak about border issues of countries except Australia Australia has not been as forthcoming in supporting India Uranium Deal was recently concluded
