Moving coil Ammeter and their conversions

Introduction, Definition of moving coil ammeter, types of ammeter concerning construction and design, AC and DC meter, Permanent moving coil ammeter, Moving iron ammeter, Electro-dynamometer ammeter, Rectifier type ammeter

The moving coil Ammeter is defined as the process of measuring both current such as  alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). This ammeter’s coil moves independently between the poles of the permanent magnet. When current flows through the coil, it begins to deflect from the coil at a specific angle.

The metre is processed for measuring anything. It is an instrument that can measure a particular quantity. The measurement of current is called Ammeter. It is also known as the ampere-metre. Ampere is the international system of units  of the current. Hence it is measured current. It is  based on the flow of current as well as its resistance. Very low impedance is used inside the ammeter as the minimum voltage to be connected to it. The ammeter is connected in series to the circuit as the current in the series circuit is the same.

The function of this instrument is to measure the flow of current with the help of a set of coils. There is very little resistance and inductive reactance inside this coil. The uses of this tool will range from school to industry. It is used to monitor the current flow in the building and ensure that it is not too low or not too high. It is used to check the temperature with a thermocouple.

Definition:-  The metre through which the current is measured is called an Ammeter.  The ideal metre has zero internal resistance. The measurement range of the ammeter depends on the value of resistance. The ammeter is connected in series with the circuit so that the entire electrons of measure and current passes through the ammeter. The resistance of the ammeter circuit is low resistance because there are small voltage drops in the circuit.

Types of Ammeter:-  Based on its construction and the ammeter current.

The types of an ammeter concerning construction are as follows:-

  1. Permanent moving coil ammeter (PMMC).
  2. Moving iron ammeter
  3. Electro-dynamometer ammeter
  4. Rectifier type ammeter.

The types of an ammeter regarding current flows are as follows:-

  • AC metre:- It measures the alternating current.
  • DC metre:- It measures the direct current.

What do you mean by AC metre?

The instrument that is used to measure the AC voltage between any two points of an electric circuit is called AC metre or AC voltmeter. If the AC metre consists of a rectifier, then it is called a rectifier based AC metre.

What do you mean by DC metre?

DC voltmeter is an instrument, which is used to measure the DC voltage between any two positions of an electric circuit. It basically restricts the amount of current that flows across the galvanometer so as to prevent the current from surpassing the full scale deflection value of the device.

  • Permanent moving coil ammeter (PMMC):-  In a permanent moving coil ammeter, the conductor is located between the poles of a permanent magnet. When current flows via the coil, it begins to deflect. The coil’s deflection is proportional to the amount of current flowing through it. The PMMC ammeter is only used to measure direct current.

  • Moving coil ammeter:-  Moving coil Ammeter is defined as the process of measuring both current such as alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). This ammeter’s coil moves independently between the poles of the permanent magnet. When current flows through the coil, it begins to deflect from the coil at a specific angle.

  • Moving iron metre:-  Moving iron metre  is used to measure the flow of current or voltage . Moving iron metre works on the principle that when a magnet is placed near iron, it automatically pulls it towards itself.

  • Electro-dynamometer ammeter:-  An electro-dynamometer ammeter is used to measure both alternating and direct current. When compared to the permanent moving coil ammeter and moving coil ammeter instruments, the accuracy of the instrument is high. Calibration of the instrument is the same for alternating current and direct current, i.e. if direct current calibrates the instrument, it can be used for alternate current measurement without re-calibration.

  • Rectifier type ammeter:- It is used to measure the alternating current. These instruments use a rectifying instrument which changes the direction of current and sends it to the permanent moving coil ammeter instrument. This type of instrument is used to measure the current in the communication circuit.

Conclusion:-

Moving coil ammeter is a measurement of both current such as  AC and DC. It independently moves between the poles of a permanent magnet. The metre through which the current is measured is called an Ammeter.  The ideal metre has zero internal resistance. The ammeter is connected in series with the circuit so that the entire electrons of measure and current passes through the ammeter. It is based on the flow of current as well as its resistance. The main function of this instrument is to measure the flow of current with the help of a set of coils. Moving coil ammeter is used in scientific laboratories, schools, industries, etc.
