Advantages and Disadvantages of Heat Pump

Heat pumps are less expensive to run t han systems that use fire to heat things like water or gas. Heat pumps are expected to be a better way to heat homes shortly.

Using a compressor and a liquid or gas refrigerant system, heat pumps move or pump heat from one place to another. Heat is taken from the outside sources and brought inside through the system.

A heat pump can have a lot of benefits for your home. Pumping the heat uses less electricity than when electricity is used only to change it. When it’s hot outside, the cycle can be changed, so that the unit acts like an air conditioner.

When it’s hot outside, heat pumps can turn the process around and act like an air conditioner so that they can cool down. When it’s hot outdoors, air-to-air heat pumps may be turned off.

5. A long life-span 

Heat pumps can last for up to 50 years. Their average life span is between 14 and 15 years, but it can vary based on usage. They are a very reliable source of heat.

6. Low Carbon Emissions

Using a heat pump system cuts down the carbon emissions. It converts energy into heat quickly, which makes it more efficient. For instance, water source heat pumps are highly efficient.

7. Eligible for RHI Scheme

There are two ways the government can help people who want to use renewable heat. You may be able to get money from the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) programme. This programme is for homeowners, renters, and self-builders. On the other hand, businesses, organisations, and industries can apply for the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive. This incentive is for companies, organisations, and industries.

Heat Pump Disadvantages

Heat pumps are a great alternative to keep your homes warm. The cost tends to be on the higher side initially; however, the benefits, in the long run, outweigh the negatives. Here are a few things you can keep in mind while choosing a heat pump:

1. Costly Upfront

In the beginning, heat pumps can cost a lot to buy. Though they cut down the cost in the longer run, they can be expensive for many to buy.

2. It’s hard to install

Before you put in heat pumps, you need to know how the heat moves, where the ground is, and how much heating or cooling your home needs. These technicalities can be difficult to figure out.

3. Sustainability isn’t sure

It is better to use biodegradable fluids because some fluids used for heat transfer aren’t very long-lasting.

4. Requires a lot of work

There is much work and disruption to your home and garden when you put in a heat pump. Penetrations must be made through the cladding of a building for their installation.

5. Problems with Cold Weather

People who live in cold places are more likely to have problems with their heat pumps. This can end up causing the system to break down to facilitate the working of the heat pump at its maximum potential. However, an upgraded heat pump system could solve this problem. All heat pumps should have their Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) checked often.

6. Not 100% carbon-neutral 

Electricity is needed for heat pumps to work, which means they can’t be completely carbon neutral. A high Coefficient of Performance (COP) makes them more efficient. 

7. Requires Permission

Various heat pump systems need permission from the authorities to be installed, which can take a lot of time.
