Alcohol

A form of organic molecule with at least one hydroxyl functional group (OH) attached to a saturated carbon atom is known as an alcohol.

What exactly are Alcohol?

Alcohols are molecules with one or more hydroxyl groups attached to aliphatic carbon atoms, whereas phenols have one or more hydroxyl groups attached to aryl carbon atoms. A hydroxyl group can be found in any type of alcohol. Some alcohols have several practical applications in everyday life.

Various Types of Alcohol

Alcohols are hydrocarbon hydroxy derivatives.

The number of hydroxyl groups determines the kind of alcohol.

Monohydric – This form of alcohol has only one hydroxyl group. Ethyl alcohol and phenol are two examples.

Dihydric – This form of alcohol has two hydroxyl groups. Glycol and 1,2-benzenediol are two examples.

Trihydric – This form of alcohol contains three hydroxyl groups. Glycerol and pyrogallol are two examples.

The number of alkyl groups connected to the hydroxylated carbon determines the kind of alcohol.

In primary alcohol- One or more alkyl groups on the carbon atoms are connected to a hydroxyl group 

Secondary Alcohol – This form of alcohol has two alkyl groups attached to a hydroxyl group on the carbon atom.

Tertiary alcohol has three alkyl groups on the carbon atoms that are connected to a hydroxyl group.

The hybridization of hydroxylated carbon determines the alcohol categories.

Compounds that have an sp3-OH bond

Alcohols are classified as

1)Primary 

2)Secondary 

3)Tertiary.

Allylic Alcohols – The hydroxyl group is connected to the sp3 hybridized carbon adjacent to the aa carbon-carbon double bond in these alcohols.

Benzylic Alcohols – The hydroxyl group is connected to an sp3 hybridized carbon atom adjacent to a romance ring in these alcohols.

sp2-OH Bond Compounds

Vinylic Alcohols have a hydroxyl group linked to one of the carbon atoms in a carbon-carbon double bond.

Phenols have a hydroxyl group linked to one of the benzene ring’s carbon atoms.

Uses:-

1) alcoholic beverages 

2)Methylated spirits for industrial use

 3)Ethanol is used as a fuel. 

4)As a solvent, ethanol is used.

 5)Methanol as a source of energy.

 6)Methanol as a feedstock for industry

Occurrence :-

Simple alcohols can be found all over the place in nature. Ethanol is the most well-known since it is a byproduct of fermentation, which is a major source of energy. Fusel Alcohols are found in trace amounts. More complex alcohols, on the other hand, are abundant, as seen in sugars, certain amino acids, and fatty acids.

Toxicity:-

Simple alcohols have low acute toxicity when it comes to acute toxicity. Several millilitre doses are tolerated. For longer alcohols such as pentanols, hexanols, and octanols Methanol and ethanol are less harmful in the short term. Alcohols are all mild irritants to the skin.

The presence of ethanol, which has a higher affinity for liver alcohol dehydrogenase, affects the metabolism of methanol (and ethylene glycol). Methanol is expelled out of body through Urine
