  2. IRELAND 1. ABORTION BAN The Republic of Ireland has voted overwhelmingly to overturn the abortion ban by 66.4% to 33.6%. 2. SITUATION PRIOR TO THE REFERENDUM -Currently, abortion is only allowed when a woman's life is at risk, but not in cases of rape, incest or fatal foetal abnormality. -The only constituency to vote against repealing the Eighth amendment was Donegal, with 51.9% voting against the change 3. 2015 Legalize same sex marriage

  3. COLUMBIA 1. NATO -Columbia has formally joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. -Colombia joined the ranks of Afghanistan, Australia, Iraq, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand and Pakistan. 2. ESTABLISHMENT -The Paris-based economic organization was founded in 1961 and has traditionally included industrialized nations, though in recent years it has extended its membership to emerging economies -The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North American and European countries based on the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on 4 April 1949.

  4. LIFE INSURANCE COVER 1. TELANGANA -The Telangana government said it would provide life insurance cover to all farmers in the state for Rs five lakh each -The scheme would get underway from August 15 this year. 2. PAYMENT OF PREMIUM The entire premium, whatever might be the total amount, would be paid by the government, it said. 3. REASON FOR DEATH IS IMMATERIAL Payment shall be made irrespective of the reason due to which a farmer dies, including natural death.

  5. FIRST SOLAR TOILET 1. MANIPUR Manipur has become the first state in the Northeast and the third state in India to have solar toilets, which were inaugurated at lbudhou Marjing hill. 2. PROCESS The solar panel, connected to the toilets, absorb the heat to generate power and are also efficient to transform waste material as claimed by the founder. 3. FOUNDER Ravi Senji, based in Chennai, had informed that the solar toilet is the third project that has been installed in Manipur. Earlier the installation had taken place in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

  6. EXPRESSWAY 1. DELHI MEERUT and EASTERN PERIPHERAL Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two newly-built expressways phase 1 of Delhi-Meerut Expressway and the Rs. 11,000 crore Eastern Peripheral Expressway, India's first smart and green highway. 2. TIME TAKEN FOR CONSTRUCTION -The Delhi-Meerut Expressway, stretching from Nizammudin Bridge to Delhi-UP border, has been completed in a record time of 18 months. -The 135-km-long Eastern Peripheral Expressway or EPE, that was dedicated by prime minister in Baghpat in UP has been built in a record time of 17 months.

  7. IMD 1. BSNL AND IMD The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is teaming up with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to send extreme weather warnings to people. 2. PROCESS BSNL has come up with a technology. If IMD sends an alert, it will be passed on to all BSNL numbers in Delhi (about an impending extreme weather event warning like thunderstorm, dust storm, heatwave. 3. AREA SPECIFIC ALERT The area-specific alerts will be sent to users if they are in that particular place where extreme weather pattern is going to occur, even if their phone numbers do not belong to that particular telecom circle.
