LAST PHASE OF THE EXERCISE The Indian and French navies are conducting the third and last phase of the 2018 Varuna naval exercise, from 1st to 7th of May, in the vicinity of Reunion Island, a French administrative department in the India Ocean. 2. FIRST AND SECOND PHASE OF THE EXERCISE 3. PART OF THE EXERCISE The seven-day exercise sees the sailors simulating different scenarios, including air defense, firing, manoeuvers, asymmetric warfare and embarkation. -Varuna exercise is part of a long-term bilateral cooperation with India

MARITIME SECURITY DIALOGUE India and the US held the third round of the India-US Maritime Security Dialogue in Goa from April 30 to May 1, days after the informal summit between India and China in Wuhan 2. DISCUSSIONS The two sides discussed developments in the maritime domain in the Indo- Pacific Region and exchanged views on ways to further strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation.

FOR SENIOR CITIZENS The Union Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on approved the doubling of investment limit in Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandan Yojana (PMVVY) to Rs. 15 lakh, from the current level of Rs. 7.5 lakh. 2. BENEFIT This will help senior citizens earn a pension of up to Rs. 10,000 per month. 3. BUDGET 2018 In Budget 2018, Finance Minister Arun Jatiley had proposed to increase the investment limit in PMVVY or Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana to Rs. 15 lakh.

  6. WHO FCTC 1. APPROVAL FOR A CONVENTION The union cabinet has given approval for India to accede to the protocol under World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) 2. AlM to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products. 3. APPLICABILITY This will be applicable to both smoking and chewing or smokeless tobacco (SLT) forms as negotiated and adopted under Article 15 of the WHO FCTC, of which India is a party.

  7. IBM 1. RESTRUCTURING OF IBM The government approved the restructuring of Indian Bureau of Mines to reform the mineral sector regulation. 2. BENEFIT The restructuring would enable the adoption of IT and space technology by the bureau to improve its effectiveness in mineral regulation and development. -create direct employment opportunities for technical personnel with higher responsibility for contribution in faster development of mineral sector.

PRIVATISATION OF POPPY The Centre has taken the first step towards privatisation of poppy cultivation and extraction of narcotic raw materials -awarded a licence to Rusan Pharma for the trial cultivation 2. USE Opium is the source of alkaloids such as morphine, codeine and the baine, used in anti-addiction therapies and medicines that treat extreme pain, such as in cancer patients 3. Opium production in India is highly controlled.

Biren Singh launched the "Go to Village" mission at Konuma ground, Laphupat Tera, Komlakhong gram panchayat in Imphal West district. 2. IN SIKKIM The Pakyong airport in Sikkim is set to become the 100th operational airport in the country when it is commissioned in June. -Low-cost airline SpiceJet has been granted permission to fly to Pakyong in Sikkim from Kolkata under the civil aviation ministry's regional connectivity scheme. 2.
