TRACHOMA 1. NEPAL Nepal has become the first country in south-east Asia to eliminate trachoma, world's leading cause of preventable blindness of infectious origin. 2. WHO STATEMENT 1998 -In 2002, the Government of Nepal had stepped up the efforts to eliminate trachoma with the establishment of a national trachoma programme. -The prevalence of active (inflammatory) trachoma in the country fell by 40 per cent following the implementation of sustained control activities from 2002 to 2005.
PCI 1. JUSTICE CHANDRAMAULI KUMAR PRASAD Former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad has been appointed as the Chairman of the Press Council of India (PCI) for a second term. 2. DECISION OF COMMITTEE The decision was reportedly taken by a three-member committee headed by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu in a meeting held for the purpose.
USOF 1. COMPREHENSIVE TELECOM DEVELOPMENT PLAN The Union Cabinet chaired by chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved Implementation of a Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan (CTDP) for the North Eastern Region(NER) in Meghalaya -at a total estimated project cost of Rs. 3911 crore to be funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) 2. BENEFITS -will result in increase the penetration of mobile connectivity in Meghalaya - furthering socio-economic developments. - The innovative skill of uncovered areas will increase through broadband and internet access.
NATIONAL SPORTS UNIVERSITY 1. MANIPUR -First National Sports University is all set to come up in Imphal, Manipur. -The university aims to fill the void in various areas such as sports science, sports technology and high-performance training, according to a bill introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2017 2. STATE UNIV WITH SPORTS COURSES the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, and the Swarnim Gujarat Sports University
CHINA DISINVITED 1. UNITED STATES The United States has disinvited China from participating in a multinational naval exercise scheduled for this summer. 2. REASON China's rapid military buildup on disputed islands in the South China Sea could be a reason for withdrawing the invitation for Beijing to participate in the large-scale naval exercise known as Rim of the Pacific, or RimPac. - Beijing has started a sharp military buildup to reclaim land, install runways and haul equipment onto reefs and shoals it claims as its own.
PRASTHA 1. NAVAL EXERCISE The Navy conducted a security exercise, called "Prasthan", in the Offshore Development Area (ODA) off the coast of Mumbai. 2. HELD EVERY SIX MONTHS The exercise, conducted by the Headquarters Western Naval Command, is held every six months. 3. AIM The exercise aims to integrate maritime stakeholders, including the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, ONGC, Port Trust, Customs, State Fisheries department and Marine Police
ASHA KIRAN 1. PAYTM Paytm Payments Bank has launched Paytm AshaKiran, a programme to educate rural women and create new employment opportunities in small towns. 2. UNDP For the first phase of this programme, Paytm has partnered with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as part of its Disha project, which is supported by the IKEA Foundation and women-related organizations like SHEROES.
