The following are some of the reasons why planning is crucial in sports:

Committees in Sports Planning

Various committees collaborate to ensure the smooth running of sporting events. The following are the several committees: 

(ì) Technical Committee: This committee is in charge of the technical operations. It chooses referees, umpires, timekeepers, and seeding in physical education, among other officials. 

(ii) Transport Committee: This group is in charge of arranging transportation for various teams to and from the venue of sporting events. 

(iii) Reception Committee: At the open or closed ceremonies, members are in charge of greeting the Chief Guest or spectators. 

(iv) Boarding and Lodging Committee: This committee handles the appropriate arrangements for lodging and meals for the athletes. 

(v) Ground and Equipment Committee: This group is in charge of making the equipment arrangements for the events.

(vi) Medical and First Aid Committee: This committee handles the medical issues of the participants during the entire tournament, day and night.

 (vii) Protest Committee: The members of this committee decide on a response to a decision. 

(viii) Publicity Committee: This committee decides on who is in conflict with all the press releases and news conferences.

(ix) Finance Committee: This committee is in charge of creating the event budget and keeping track of the expenditure. 

(x) Refreshment Committee: This committee is designed to provide participants with refreshments and improve their efficiency.

What is a tournament?  

A tournament is a competition in which a large number of people compete in the same sport or game. It’s a sequence of matches with multiple rounds in which numerous candidates compete, either alone or as a team, to choose the winner. In other words, a tournament is a series of competitions wherein multiple contestants participate, with the winner being the one who advances to the final round or has the best overall record.

It depends on the following factors: 

  • Number of participating teams 
  • Availability of grounds and equipment
  • Number of days and funds

Economic Importance of Tournaments  

The following are the economic importance of tournaments:

  • Source of recreation: For pleasure, many individuals watch numerous games and sports.
  • Sports tournaments give viewers plenty of entertainment.
  • Sports tournaments build social traits such as teamwork, tolerance, brotherhood, and discipline.
  • Playing competitions teaches a sportsman discipline.
  • At a single platform, the athlete meets other athletes.
  • Honesty, fairness, and respect for others are among the ethical ideals they learn.
  • Tournaments entertain the organisers, spectators, and students.

Types of tournaments

Knockout: 

When a team loses in this form of event, they are removed from the competition. Only the top teams advance to the next round. Successful players are offered opportunities.

League or round ribbon: 

In a league or round ribbon competition, every team competes against every other team, regardless of success or defeat.

There are 2 kinds of leagues:

  • Single League
  • Double League 

Combination Tournaments: 

Group or zonal matches are used in combination events. Combination competitions make the job of the physical education teacher easier as there are a lot of teams.  

Challenge Tournament: 

When there are one-on-one games or two participants on each side, this tournament form comes in handy. The opposing player accepts the challenge when one person challenges the other. Boxing, tennis, table tennis, and badminton are some of the sports in which tournaments were conducted.

Conclusion 

In physical education, a fixture is the calendar or plan of sporting activities or matches that are played against a team on a given date or time. The fixtures can include the names of the teams, the opposing team’s name, the match’s time, the match’s location, and so on. Seeding, bye, and special seeding are tactics used to draw fixtures in the knockout phase. When there are an odd number of teams playing in a tournament, one of them is given a bye so that a stronger team can prepare for the first knockout round.
