Logical Puzzles

A challenge that can be addressed by employing deductive reasoning is referred to as a logical conundrum. This article provides a synopsis of the several categories of logical puzzles that one could face as well as the problem-solving strategies that are employed to solve those puzzles.

Syllogisms

A syllogism is an example of a logical puzzle, and it is also one of the most straightforward. In this kind of puzzle, you will be presented with a number of claims, and it will be up to you to deduce the existence of some fact based on those statements. Applying the rules of propositional logic and predicate logic typically results in a successful solution to these kinds of conundrums. The following is a syllogism that was written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, most commonly known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll.

Grids for Elimination

To solve certain types of logical puzzles, you will need to decide which items belong together in each collection of items. The process of elimination is a technique that can frequently be used to solve puzzles like this, and an elimination grid is an efficient instrument for applying this technique.

Elimination grids are laid out in such a way that each row represents an item that is part of a set, and each column indicates an item that needs to be paired with an item from that set. Marks such as checkboxes and crosses are utilised to indicate which items are compatible with one another and which items are incompatible.

Truth Tellers and Those Who Lie

A truth-teller and liar puzzle, also known as a knights and knaves problem, is a type of elimination puzzle that can be played as a variation. You are presented with a group of people and the statements that they make, and you are informed that some of the people in the group always tell the truth, while others always lie. This type of puzzle requires you to determine which group is which. The objective of the puzzle is to infer the reality from the assertions that are presented.

Cryptograms

The objective of a puzzle known as a cryptogram is to decipher the numerical digits that have been replaced by characters in a number sentence. The goal of the puzzle is to determine the values of the characters.

Puzzles Involving Arithmetic

The goal of arithmetic puzzles, which often consist of a sequence of numbers, operations, and blanks arranged in a specific order, is to determine how to fill in the blanks so as to arrive at a particular answer.

Challenge of the River Crossing

The objective of a puzzle referred to as a river crossing is to determine how to transport a group of people or objects over a river (or another type of obstacle) while taking the fewest number of steps possible and spending the least amount of time doing so.

Nonograms

A nonogram is a type of grid-based puzzle that requires players to solve a series of number clues that are presented alongside a rectangular grid. The grid will reveal a picture once the puzzle has been finished being assembled.

The first thing you’ll notice when you look at the problem is a string of numbers to the left and above the grid. Each of these numbers represents a string of shaded spaces that runs consecutively in the row or column that corresponds to that number. At least one empty space lies between each successive run and the subsequent runs that come after it. When each of the number requirements has been met, the problem can be considered solved. The process of elimination is the fundamental strategy that should be utilised when attempting to solve these riddles. If the problem is well-designed, there shouldn’t be any need for you to make any educated guesses.

Puzzles of Ships at Battle

The Battleship puzzle is one of the many logical puzzles that may be found (sometimes called Bimaru, Yubotu, Solitaire Battleships or Battleship Solitaire). The game of Battleship served as the inspiration for this puzzle.

Jaime Poniachik, an Argentinian, came up with the idea for the game of Solitaire Battleships, and the game was initially published in the journal Humor & Juegos.

This is an example of a Battleship puzzle that has been solved. The puzzle is made up of a grid of little squares that are 10 by 10, each of which contains the following:

1 ship of the line 4 squares long 2 cruisers 3 squares long each 3 destroyers Each submarine is 2 squares long, and there are a total of 4 of them.

They can be arranged in either the horizontal or the vertical plane, but never in the diagonal plane. The boats are arranged in such a way that none of them will touch one another in any way, not even vertically. The numbers that are located next to each row and column reflect the total number of occupied squares in that particular row or column. The symbol for a submarine is a submarine, and the symbol for the body of a ship is a ship. The half circles represent the beginning and end of a ship.

Sudoku

A sudoku is a type of logic puzzle that is played on a grid that is 9 × 9, and in which each row, column, and smaller square component of the grid must contain all of the digits from 1 to 9, but not more than once each. At the beginning of each puzzle, some of the empty places on the grid are already filled in. The objective here is to complete the puzzle by filling in the blank spaces. The process of elimination is the primary method that can be used to solve the riddle. There should be just one answer to each given riddle, and there shouldn’t be any room for speculation in the process of finding it.

Conclusion

A logical enigma is a problem that can be solved using deductive reasoning. This page describes logical puzzle categories and problem-solving methodologies. Syllogisms are simple logical puzzles. You’ll be given a set of claims and asked to determine the existence of a fact from them. Applying propositional and predicate logic usually solves these puzzles. This syllogism was penned by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll.
