(NPCIL) an ex tension of time till April 30, 2022, to build an Away From Reactor (AFR) facilit to store spent nuclear er plant. A three judge Bench, led by Chief Justice Dipak Mis ra, said public interest prompted the court to agree to the NPCIL's re quest for an extension of time to build the facility. The court did not agree to the demand by advocate Prashant Bhushan, for acti vist G. Sundarajan, to shut down the plant till the facil ity was ready. It suggested that he file an independent application and not mix the issue with the NPCIL's current plea for more time. Mr. Bhushan said the continued operation of the plant without a "deep un- derground repository" to store the radioactive spent fuel was an open invitation to a catastrophe. He ar gued that the AFR facility was supposed to be built in five years, but this had not been done. In 2013, the court granted five years to NPCIL, till July 2018. FRONT PAGE-THE HINDU
