Introduction

The Indian Police Service, or IPS , is one of the three branches of All India Services (AIS), along with the IAS and the IFoS. It replaced the role of the Indian Imperial Police in 1948. An IPS officer must ensure the public’s safety by upholding law and order. They also supervise and command the police agencies of the states and Union Territories, the CAPF forces (CRPF, BSF, SSB, CISF, and ITBP), the National Security Guards, and so on. Indian Police Service

The Indian Police Service (IPS) helps the Indian society to prevent crimes and maintain peace among the common people by critically investigating the entire crime scene. The Indian Police Service is the fundamental stand of the Indian democracy to maintain the Sovereignty, Integrity, and “Law and Order” of India. This is associated with the designation of entry-level IPS that the officer works as “ASP (Additional Superintendent of Police)” and is promoted to the next level within 3-4 years which is the most crucial journey of the officer during the career. This is because the office is able to work in the field role of District administration to achieve more practices for field jobs. 

History for IPS

The origin of IPS is from the British rule in India. It was also known as the Imperial Police. After independence, some rules came into the ground that allow Indians to get entry into this service. In 1948, it was renamed as Indian Police Service.

Eligibility Criteria to get recruited as IPS Officer

  • The candidate should be an Indian national
  • They should have a minimum age of 21 years
  • The candidate must be a graduate of a well-recognized university
  • They should meet the physical fitness standards for this exam
  • For the Unreserved and EWS categories, there are not more than 6 attempts for this exam

Recruitment & Training  of an IPS 

The recruitment of the IPS officers is done with the help of Civil Services Examinations, which are conducted by the UPSC. While filling up the application form, the candidate needs to choose his/her preferences for IPS or IAS. UPSC releases the same form for both posts. However, the applicants will be assigned to the training as per their obtained rank and preferences.

At first, the selected candidates will undergo joint training for 3 months of duration. This general training will take place at the foundation level in Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. After that, the IPS candidates will go for special training. They get this training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Police Training Academy, Hyderabad. This training duration is usually a year. This training includes physical fitness and law enforcement.

Functions and Responsibilities of IPS

Indian Police Service is the workplace where the interaction between police officers and communities is established to prevent crimes. The field practices are provided in the entry-level designations to the officers for maintaining crime scenes in the real scenario. The IPS officers are the “Ex-officio Head” of the Police stations and all the district levels officers Fired services, Unarmed Units, and Armed Police units to maintain the quietness across Indian Society. Apart from this, the day-to-day duties are also included in the responsibilities of IPS officers such as investigation, crime prevention, detection, intelligence collection, counterintelligence, railway policing, drug trafficking, corruption, and smuggling in the life of communities. The socio-economic legislation is also maintained by the IPS officers to increase awareness among the communities for tracking crimes. Anti-drug campaigns are developed for reducing crime levels. Salary of an IPS Officer

According to the 7th Pay Commission, the civil service pay grade structure has been phased out, and the aggregation pay level has already been implemented. As a result, the IPS pay scale is based only on the basic salary plus TA, DA, and HRA. The basic salary can start from Rs. 56,100 per month.

The DGP is the highest authority in a police state (Director General of Police).
