The commission releases the notification of the exam typically in the month of February. Candidates can register for the exam online by visiting the Commission’s Website (upsc.gov.in ). Admit cards are issued one month prior to the Preliminary Exam. The Preliminary examination is meant to serve as a screening test only; the marks obtained by the candidates in the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination are not counted in the subsequent stages of the exam. The number of candidates to be admitted to the Civil Services (Main) Examination will be approximately twelve to thirteen times the number of vacancies to be filled in the year, as listed in the Notification. Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test, which is held in the premises of the UPSC in Delhi. The numbers of candidates shortlisted for the interview are typically 2-3 times the number of vacancies listed in the Notification. On the basis of marks obtained in the Main Examination and Interview, a final merit list is prepared. Every candidate has to pass all three stages of the UPSC CSE Exam in order to be successful. Usually, the commission declares the final result in the month of April. Due to the ongoing COVID19 crisis, the exam cycle has been disrupted with the Preliminary Examination being scheduled in October (Instead of May/June) and the Main Examination in the month of January (Instead of September/October).
The marks of all the three stages-Preliminary, Main and Personality tests- are published on the Commission’s Website, only after the declaration of final results.
