It talks about the different situations that Indian women have faced every day. Also, it talks about the different reasons that determine the severity of traumas at the hands of families and Society. Finally, it will also mention a few ways by which families and therapists can join hands to prevent the status of Indian women from getting any worse.

Psychological Dilemma of Women in Today’s Society

Indian history has seen many women who have fought their ways against odds to rise in power and receive respect and value from Society. From Jhansi’s Rani Lakshmi Bai to Female Freedom Fighters who have fought relentlessly to help the nation achieve its independence, women’s contribution to Indian Society is incomparable. Yet, they do not receive the same status as their male counterparts. In the present scenario, Indian women are an image of great strength, zeal, success, power, and independence. But there are several instances in everyday life where women face backlashes or even negative reviews for expressing their opinions or behaving of their own free will from people around them. 

There is a noticeable physiological and psychological difference between men and women. The hormones in the Male brain differ from that of females. Their body structure differs from their female counterparts. The female brain contains progesterone and oestrogen, while the male brain is filled with testosterone. The hormone oestrogen makes women sociable and helps them feel what other people around them are feeling or going through, thus making them more compassionate and empathetic. If one has to compare the psychological aspect, men and women are built differently. Their neurodevelopmental and cognitive development are different from that of a man. Both men and women would react differently in a given situation, which proves their differently-abled cognitive processes. The hormonal development in the foetal brain is due to the Genetic determines makeup, which primarily creates the difference between a man and a woman. Several types of research have been conducted to see the difference in stress and disaster responses. Now, intertwined with the rich Indian culture, the differences between men and women have been seen in several degrees.

Indian women have been raised to deliver different duties of mothering throughout their life, right from being sisters to a mother and even an aunt or grandmothers. It is not usual in Western Society. From an early age, Indian women are taught morals and principles that they need to have. From a young age, women are made to believe that they need a man to survive in this world, and it is a man who can provide what they want. Therefore, she needs to fulfil the aims put by others and has to remain suppressed all her life. But with time, women have become independent and are not oppressed. They have achieved more goals than others put in front of her. She is doing everything in her capability with a bit of support.

The depiction of Indian women in Society is through her marriage. She works for her family, feeds her family, and gets identified through her family. Serving the family becomes so extreme that it hampers her, even when her family is not reciprocating the same efforts. At times, the stress built up due to several domestic reasons causes women to become somatization patients, also known as conversion disorder. Even though the status of Indian women is gradually changing for the better, there are several sections of the Society where she is an underdog. She will be proud of her accomplishments, but that won’t last long due to the pressure she receives from her parents back at home. Indian women succumb to such pressure lies in the psychology of Indian women.

Mental health experts need to help women realize their true potential. There is a dire need for women to understand their identity is more than their marriage and their duty toward their family. Their growth is part of their being and is the ultimate truth. Respecting women for just being human beings is a principle that Indian Society needs to understand. The truth lies that Indian Society will be happier with content women who are confident and proud of their true selves.
