An Idea on Ummid Yojana

UMMID( Unique Methods of Management and Treatment of Inherited Disorders ) was launched by Dr Harsh Vardhan, who was the Union Minister for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences and Family Welfare.

NIDAN (National Inherited Diseases) was also initiated along with UMMID by Dr Harsh, which is supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), M/o Science and Technology. The Minister of Science and Technology, speaking on occasion in New Delhi, brought highlights to the problems that make sure to provide proper treatment to all children regardless of wealth and awareness has been created amongst the crowd and urged all to rethink into searching for new solutions as much possible. However, as reported by Dr Harsh Vardhan. The program is being inaugurated and implemented at different government hospitals. This was taken care of by the DBT who cannot go for pursuing expensive treatment and care for the genetic disorders will benefit from them.

More on the Yojana

UMMID is an unconventional step in the sector of healthcare, as highlighted by Dr Renu Swarup, who was the Secretary of DBT. The hopes of a large number of persons with inherited diseases are met by the initiatives played by the UMMID Yojana. Congenital and hereditary genetic diseases are taken into account. These factors are becoming a major load in the country. The need for sufficient and effective genetic testing is released along with counselling services.

The UMMID Initiative or Yojana is designed on the concept which defines that prevention is better than cure. DBT has, however, started this initiative. The third most common cause of mortality in newborns is birth defects and genetic disorders in the urban regions or areas of the country. In many communities in India, kinship marriages are favoured along with a very large population and high birth rates. There is a high occurrence of genetic disorders in India.

Objectives of UMMID Yojana

The objectives of the UMMID Yojana could be as follows-

  • NIDAN Kendras were established to provide counselling
  • Diagnosis and fetal testing
  • Management
  • In Government hospitals, multidisciplinary care is provided when there are more patients.
  • In human genetics, more skilled clinicians are being produced
  • In pregnant women, screening is undertaken
  • The undertaking of newborn babies born with Inherited genetic diseases in hospitals in desired districts

In the first phase, as a part of this Yojana, there is the establishment of five NIDAN Kendras that provide extreme clinical care.

Training Centres Are Allotted to Different Research

Madras Medical Mission in Chennai, SGPGIMS in Lucknow, CDFD in Hyderabad, AIIMS in New Delhi, MAMC in New Delhi, NIIH in Mumbai and CMC in Vellore. To provide training in Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics, Molecular genetics and Clinical genetics, these training centres have been supported thoroughly by all the clinicians from government-based hospitals. For inherited genetic diseases, screening of 10,000 pregnant women and 5000 newborn babies at the following desired districts will be taken up.

There is extreme planning to extend the program by the Department and also establish many more NIDAN Kendras in other parts of the country as well. There is also a need to train more clinicians in clinical genetics and more desired districts will be covered where there would be a screening of pregnant women and newborn babies for inherited genetic diseases. This provides proper clinical treatment and care under the UMMID Yojana in the next phase.

Components of UMMID Yojana

There are three components of the UMMID Yojana-

  • Companionship in genetic diagnostics- Doctors will be provided for six months of training on hand who are working in government hospitals with state of the art by eight departments. For genetic disorders, DNA based diagnostic services will be provided.
  • NIDAN Kendras- They are also known as the diagnostic centres. Hospitals that are well acquainted with interested doctors, administrators that are committed and basic infrastructure have been chosen and also been funded for the establishment of genetic laboratories.
  • Prevention of Genetic Disorders in desired districts- The 7 centres each providing genetic training in desired districts have been included.

Conclusion

Hence counselling services to pregnant women and provision of genetic testing for the prevention of inherited disorders in borns is what UMMID focuses on.
