Three Stages of GSLV MK-III

Learn about the 3 stages of GSLV MK III- The mechanism, the specification of the GSAT-19 satellite, and all vital information about GSLV MK-III.

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has scaled new heights in space research and has been the major driving force for India’s rise in the field of space. GSLV launch vehicles can launch and carry a weight of 4 tons of different classes of satellites to GTO or earth’s outer orbit. Through 3 stages of GSLV MK III- the mechanism speaks volumes about the scientific advancements we have reached in the field of space. Let’s learn more about GSLV MK-III and the specification of the GSAT-19 satellite.

What is the GSLV Launch Vehicle?

GSLV launch vehicle is considered the first flight developed to carry a large size of 3,136 kg satellite into the earth’s outer orbit through the 3 stages of GSLV MK III- the mechanism. The launch vehicle is made with a payload with straps that provide systematic robustness during the lift.

  • It is a launch vehicle designed for heavy lifting and carrying artificial satellites to the earth’s outer orbit.
  • It contains two solid straps powered by a motor( S200) and liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen projectile installed in its primary stage, including an ultracold stage that is already installed.
  • Another feature of GSLV MK III D1 is it can carry a huge 4-ton weight class of satellites to the earth’s outer orbit.
  • ISRO scientists have designed GSLV MK III so that it can carry about 10 tons to earth’s lower orbit, more than twice the strength of GSLV MK II.

The 3 Stages of GSLV MK III- The Mechanism

GSLV launch vehicle launched the GSAT-19 satellite on 5th June 2017 from the SDSC facility in Sriharikota. The mechanism of the GSLV launch vehicle is as follows:

  • It has two motors situated on both sides, carrying tons of semi composite or composite solid projectile, whose ignition results in the vehicle’s take-off.
  • For nearly 140 seconds, the solid toe straps motor function. In the second stage, the compiled engine, which is a liquid booster, leads to the ignition of the launch vehicle 114 seconds after lift-off of the vehicle.
  • In the third stage, the two engines further result in separation or thrust of the vehicle nearly after 140 seconds of lift up.

What is GSAT19 Mission?

GSAT19 satellite was launched from a GSLV launch vehicle on 5th June 2017 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) Sriharikota. Let’s learn more about what the GSAT19 satellite is:

  • GSAT19 is a communication satellite weighing approximately 3,136 kg that has been designed under the standard of ISRO’s requirements.
  • Another specification of the GSAT19 satellite is that GSAT19 is a carrier of Ka/Ku – band acting as a communication transponder for receiving signals and frequencies.
  • It is also a carrier of a radiation spectrometer whose main objective is to study and monitor all the charged particles in outer space and the impact of radiation in space and its electronic components.
  • The GSAT19 satellite also comprises small heat pipes, micromechanical systems, and a lithium battery for functioning with all its other specifications.

The Specifications of GSAT19 Satellite

The following are the specifications of the GSAT19 satellite:

  •  Weight of the satellite: 3136 kg approx.
  • Dry mass weight: 1394 kg approx.
  • Total Mission life: 10 years approx
  • Launch vehicle name: GSLV MK III- D1 launch vehicle
  • Type and nature of satellite: It is a communication satellite
  • Name of manufacturer: Indian Space Research Organisation( ISRO)
  • Name of owner: Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO)
  • Name of the application: Communication application
  • Nature of orbit type: Earth’s outer orbit
