Sikkim government is preparing to unveil a scheme (Bahini) to install vending machines that would give away free sanitary pads. For the first time, a state government has chosen to cover all females in grades 9 through 12. Its purpose is to give girls in secondary and senior secondary school “complete access to free and safe sanitary pads. “It also intends to lower the number of girls dropping out of school and promote knowledge about menstruation hygiene. The project is based on a 2018 experiment in which vending machines were put in select schools by the state government in partnership with Sulabh International. Sulabh International is an Indian social service organization that uses education to promote human rights, environmental cleanliness, alternative energy sources, waste management, and social changes. The ultimate goal of the bahini scheme is to reduce the dropout rate from schools among young girls due to menstrual reasons and the government aims to do so by providing the girls from classes 9 to 12 with free sanitary napkins and educating them about menstrual hygiene with will encourage them to continue with their education.
