India is very vigilant today about growth and development in various rural and urban regions. To get the optimum results, the government introduces various missions and schemes under which certain tasks are performed. Urban transformation is one such mission that has been recently in the talks to complete its primary period successfully. It is currently in the news as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has organised an online event to commemorate six successful years of three Urban missions. It has been the talk of the town as it has marked success in various complex tasks and schemes for urban growth and development. Our Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, launched these urban missions.
Urban Transformation: An Overview
Urban transformation is the mission launched by a government whose three schemes were considered successful and recently commemorated by MoHUA (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs). This commemoration was an online event where the official stated the achievement and success of three basic urban missions, i.e., PMay-U (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana), SCM (Smart City Mission), and AMRUT (Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation). It stated the six successful years of transformation with commendable results. Â
This commemoration was also in the limelight for the 45 years of the National Institute of Urban Affairs’s successful establishment. It is an autonomous organisation functional to hold the responsibility of such governmental missions and complete them successfully in the specific duration and desired standards. This body also holds the responsibility for successfully bridging the gap between the practice issues and research aspects related to urbanisation.

Achievements Of Mission:

- SCM (Smart City Mission):Â
The major achievement and progress in the smart city mission have developed the Integrated command and control station (ICCS) in the 70 cities. It is the major transformation and progress under Smart City Mission with the successful operation and results in these six years of transformation.
- PMAY-U (Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana):
Under the PMAY-U mission, 83 lakh houses are grounded with the bulk sanctioned capital of 1.13 lakh rupees for the homeless people of India. Sixteen lakh families have benefited from this urban transformation under CSS (Credit Subsidy Scheme). PMAY-U has the associated Affordable Rental Housing Complex Scheme to provide houses for the poor and immigrant individuals. This government scheme has created approximately 246 lakh jobs for jobless individuals.
- AMRUT (Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation):
This mission launched by the government has successfully marked the permanent connection of 78 lakh sewage connections and 1.05 crore household tap water connections in certain areas under the AMRUT government mission. As per the TERI (The Energy Resource Institute), 84.6 carbon mission footprints were decreased through several potent practices and initiatives. These practices were organised under AMRUT (Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) mission. For the advanced energy-saving mission, 88 lakh streetlights were replaced by LED lights under this mission.
Objectives of Urban Transformation missions:
There are certain objectives and details about the urban transformation which are necessary to understand the core perspective of these missions. Below are the details:
- SCM:
It is a Smart City Mission to provide upgraded standards and quality of life with the help of smart techniques and technology integration. It focuses on the growth and development of underdeveloped and compact areas with smart technical solutions and improves citizens’ day-to-day lives.
- PLAY-U:
Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana was launched on 25 June 2015 to provide permanent housing facilities for citizens in specific urban areas by 2022. It is under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) control. It intends to provide the basic housing facility to slum dwellers, poor and immigrant citizens.
- AMRUT:
Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation was launched in 2015. The prominent focus of this scheme was to ensure the facility provides the proper sewage and tap water to each household in urban areas. It also aims to reduce pollution by implementing greenery ideas and proper maintenance of open areas.
