Science & Technology – UPSC Prelims Previous Years’ Questions (2011 to 2020)

The General Studies (GS) Paper I of UPSC Prelims includes questions from a variety of topics, including Science & Technology. Candidates writing the exam must have basic to intermediate knowledge of the subject in order to score well.

The number of questions on Science & Technology in GS Paper I differs slightly from year to year. There were 13 questions on the subject in Prelims 2021, 12 questions in Prelims 2020, 11 questions in Prelims 2019, 13 questions in Prelims 2018, and 9 questions in Prelims 2017.

It must be noted that Science & Technology-related questions do not call for an intensive knowledge of Science subjects or technology. A vast majority of the questions require basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology, or are related to current affairs. Though usually factual in nature, questions are sometimes indirectly framed to test the candidate’s ability to apply facts and figure out concepts.
