Waste management

Waste management is the activity and actions required to manage garbage from its genesis to its final disposal that are referred to as waste management (or waste disposal).

Waste can be classified as solid, liquid, or gaseous, and each type has its own set of disposal and management procedures. 

Garbage management is concerned with the disposal of all sorts of waste, including industrial and biological waste as well as domestic and municipal waste as well as organic, biomedical, and radioactive waste. 

When waste is disposed off improperly, it can endanger human health. 

Throughout the entire waste management process, there are health risks that must be considered. 

Health problems might also occur in an indirect or direct manner. 

Through the handling of solid waste and indirectly through the consumption of water, soil, and food are two ways in which we contribute to global warming. 

Waste is generated as a result of human activity, such as the extraction and processing of raw materials, for example. 

In order to limit the negative consequences of waste on human health, the environment, planetary resources, and aesthetics, waste management must be implemented.

Different techniques to waste management can be found in different countries (developed and developing countries), geographies (urban versus rural areas), and residential and industrial sectors, all of which might differ from one another.

When it comes to solid waste, it refers to the undesired or unusable solid materials generated by human activity in residential, industrial, or commercial sectors.

If they are not dealt with in a scientific and discriminating manner, they can pose a major threat to human health.

Generally speaking, industrial solid waste (ISW) is classified as hazardous waste because it contains toxic substances, is corrosive, is extremely combustible, or reacts when exposed to specific items, such as gases. 

Industrial solid waste (ISW) is generated by manufacturing and processing industries.

Agricultural waste: Agricultural waste is waste that is generated as a result of the different agricultural operations that take place. 

Pesticides that enter water, air, or soil; manure and other waste from farms, poultry houses, and slaughterhouses; harvest waste; fertiliser run-off from fields; salt and silt drained from fields are all examples of what is considered polluting the environment.

The extraction and processing of mineral resources generates trash that is referred to as mining waste.

 It comprises items such as topsoil overburden (which is removed in order to obtain access to mineral resources), waste rock, and tailings (which are produced during the mining process) (after the extraction of the valuable mineral).

Environmental contamination as a result of the disposal of  wastes

Poor waste management contributes to climate change and air pollution, and it has a direct impact on a wide range of ecosystems and animals, including humans. 

Methane is released from landfills, which are regarded to be the last resort in the waste hierarchy.

 Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that has been connected to climate change.

Many industrialised and developing countries are grappling with a serious and widespread challenge when it comes to solid waste disposal.

 This is true in both urban and rural areas. Municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and disposal is one of the most serious problems facing urban environments around the world today, and this is true in nearly every country.

 MSW management systems must be financially viable, technically possible, socially acceptable, legally acceptable, and ecologically beneficial in order to be effective. 

The issue of solid waste management is the most difficult one for municipal governments in both small and major communities to address.

 Furthermore, efficient waste management strategies must be used while keeping the environment in mind at all times.

Furthermore, these approaches are quite useful for disposing of waste in a manner that does not impact the surrounding ecosystem.
