The electrons in an element’s outermost or valence shell play a big role in determining its properties. Inner shell electrons have limited influence on the characteristics of elements, while valence electrons interact with other atoms and participate in all chemical reactions. The elements with the same number of valence shell electrons are repeated in such a way that they come under the same group when placed in order of increasing atomic number. Because the valence shell electrons have the same electrical arrangement, they have identical properties.

Features of Modern Periodic Table

In the modern periodic table, there are eighteen vertical columns, known as groups, that are organised from left to right, and seven horizontal rows, known as periods.

The contemporary periodic table is crucial in the study of chemistry. 

The following are some of the most important characteristics of the contemporary periodic table. 

  • The elements are arranged in ascending order by their atomic numbers

  • Periods are seven horizontal rows and groups are eighteen vertical columns

  •  Because they all have the same number of outer electrons, elements in a group have comparable physical and chemical properties

  • However, when we proceed from top to bottom in a group, they show a steady change

  • When compared to the 63 elements in Mendeleev’s periodic table, the current periodic table has more elements. It currently has 118 elements.

Without the existence of the present periodic table, it is fair to conclude that studying the chemistry of elements would have been impossible. The contemporary periodic table’s classification of elements aids in the better understanding of element properties.

The main features of modern periodic table 

The long form of the periodic table has vertical columns referred to as groups and horizontal rows referred to as periods.

  • The atomic numbers of the elements are ordered in ascending order.

  • The contemporary periodic table divides elements into seven periods and 18 groupings.

  • Periods and groups are the terms for horizontal rows and vertical columns, respectively.

  • Periods are assigned to elements based on the number of shells present in their atoms.

  • The first phase, which comprises only two elements — hydrogen and helium – is the shortest.

  • The elements of the second phase range from Lithium to Neon.

  • The elements in the third period range from Sodium to Argon.

  • The elements in the fourth period range from potassium to krypton.

  • Elements in the fifth period range from Rubidium to Xenon.

  • In the periodic table, the sixth period is considered the longest. It contains a variety of elements ranging from Cesium to Radon.

  • The seventh period is an unfinished period.

  • Lanthanides are found in the sixth period’s group IIIB.

  • Actinides are found in group IIIB of the seventh periodic table. 

  • Lanthanides and Actinides are at the bottom of the periodic table.
