Resorcinol

Resorcinol is a white, water-soluble organic compound that is primarily used in the production of resins and other polymers. It can be found in solid flaky form or as a powder. There are several names for it, including resorcin, 1,3-dihydroxybenzene, 3-hydroxyphenol, and m-benzenediol.

Resorcinol is a chemical compound with the chemical formula C6H6O2. It is an organic compound. It is one of three isomeric benzenediols that are white in colour and soluble in water; it is the most common. Resorcin and m-Dihydroxybenzene are other names for this compound. It is the 1,3-isomer of the compound benzenediol. It is a benzenediol that has benzene dihydroxylated at positions 3 and 1 in the benzene chain. It has two functions: it sensitises the body and it inhibits the production of erythropoietin.

Resorcin is a crystalline solid that is very white in colour and is soluble in water, ether, and alcohol. It is used to treat various ailments. It has a faint odour and a sweetish to bitter taste that ranges from sweet to bitter. Carbon disulfide and chloroform are not soluble in this solution. If it is not in its purest form, it will turn pink when exposed to light. It burns, but it is extremely difficult to ignite. In the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and plastics, it is widely used as a solvent.

Uses of Resorcinol (C6H6O2)

Resorcinol is used in a variety of ways:

  • Resorcinol is a chemical compound that is used in pharmaceutical products as a disinfectant or antiseptic.

  • Acne, psoriasis, calluses, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis are all conditions that can be treated with this medication.

  • It is used in the production of resins.

  • It is an analytical reagent that is used to assess the quality of ketoses.

Production of resorcinol

m-Dihydroxybenzene, a number of different methods are available. Some of them are discussed in this section. The reaction of benzene with propylene results in the formation of 1,3-diisopropyl benzene. A Hock rearrangement and oxidation of the resulting product yields resorcinol and acetone, as well as acetone.

It can be made by melting resins such as asafoetida and galbanum with KOH (potassium hydroxide) or by distilling Brazilwood extract, both of which are natural sources of potassium hydroxide.

Another method is to melt benzene-1,3-disulfonic acid, phenol-3-sulfonic acid, 3-iodophenol, and benzene-1,3-disulfonic acid in the presence of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) by the action of nitrous acid (HNO2) on 1,3-diaminobenzene or 3-aminophenol in the presence of potassium carbonate (K2CO3). Resorcinol can be obtained by fusing various para and ortho compounds of the aromatic series, such as benzene-para-disulfonic acid and bromophenols, with potassium hydroxide (potassium hydroxide).

Conclusion
