India has always been point of attraction for foreign invaders due to its rich Natural and mineral resources, be it Turks Arabs Mughals dutch Portuguese some made it their home while some looted it for their benefits .The English east India company could successfully implement it's divide and rule policy over the subcontinent and took over the administration from provinces as well as the princely states .By the end of eighteenth century British took complete control complete control over the subcontinent .The industrial revolution more or less started at this period, many scientific inventions and technological advancements advancement encouraged the british to export all raw materials from India ,it is to be noted that not just the raw materials the east india company looted diamonds, and lot of gold products from India .A lot of human labour has been exported during this period from all Britan colonies to Britan .This way the English could successfully Drain wealth in all forms to develop their nation leaving the colonies(especially India) in dark age.

  6. LIVEMINT: CRISES AND CRITICAL POINTS GS-1/2 Tamil Nadu is facing a serious water shortage, its third high-profile environmental crisis in two years. o The east coast floods of 2015 were among the world's top 10 most expensive natural disasters that year Cyclone The east coast floods of 2015 were among the world's top 10 most expensive natural disasters that year. Cyclone Vardah, and now we have a drought, this time across the state. o Due to shortfall by 40% in rains by N-E monsoons. o Scale of crisis-The Mettur dam, where the Cauvery enters Tamil Nadu, is at about a third of full capacity, and Dueto shortfallby 40% in dinght, thstumeacrossthestatendstespensurenaturaldisastersthatreacarlone storage of just over 10% of capacity The Vaigai dam, which provides irrigation and drinking water to the southern districts, was at 4% of its storage capacity as 2017 opened Water in the state's 15 major reservoirs is at just 13% of storage capacity, even before summer starts. Govt's Response to the first two disasters were relatively swift, effective and impressively collaborative. o Vardah- advance preparations helped in quick clean up post some hiccups due to community participation. o But the issue remains these were just Reponses- Implementation about the need to rethink o But the issue remains these were just Reponses- Implementation about the need to rethink land-use planning infrastructure development, financial and legal structures for risk management, and preparation for disasters- have been limited.

  7. LIVEMINT: CRISES AND CRITICAL POINTS GS-1/2 Whythis timeJustthe response wont be enough. Tamil Nadu relies substantially on water from rivers shared with other states-30% of its water storage capacity-more than that of its reservoirs -is in the form of "contribution from other states" o Most of the waters sharing of rivers between states are contentious and contended in courts, corridors of power, and the streets. The Krishna River Water Management Board (KRWMB) has to decide on contributions from each post bifurcation of Andhra,Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and T.N. o Further exploiting the near-term sources will only compound the water problem- electricity for farmers or digging additional borewells -groundwater extraction. o A 2015-16 report of the Lok Sabha standing committee on water resources found that groundwater has been over-exploited (more water withdrawn than net recharge) in 33% of the blocks assessed in the states. It is critical or semi-critical (withdrawal more than 80% or 70% of recharge) in another quarter of the blocks assessed shortages and demonstrate forward-looking transformational leadership that cuts across the state's economy. could contribute to the state's future economic growth and exports-developing a deeper, more integrated, more o This crisis-is an opportunity to rise above the tried-and-true but increasingly ineffective usual responses to water o to build a consensus around the expense and dislocations of a strong push for water-saving innovation that, in turn, forward-looking strategy

  8. LIVEMINT: A ROLE FOR INDIA IN REBUILDING SYRIA GS-2 o Extending its soft power arm to Middle East, India is looking forward for major reconstruction projects in Syria o It would be in line to its commitment to its pre-war projects, especially Tishreen Power Plant o It signals that India want Assad regime to be firmly rooted as endgame of Syrian crisis plays itself out. o In 2009, before conflict, India have Line of Credit of $100 million for construction of Tishreen power project, to be executed by BHEL o ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) along with China National Petroleum Corp has got stake in Syria's Al Furat Petroleum Co. OVL also won bid for exploration oil /natural gas. All investments has to be abandoned Throughout conflict era India maintained diplomatic relations with Assad regime. Consolidated Assad regime with help of Russia is going to give investments reinvigorated phase o India had to balance between moral choice of standing against violence- be it state led or by terrorists, on one hand and necessity of realpolitik on other hand. o India chose to respect "territorial integrity" of Syria instead of disintegration of state into rebel factions. o Consolidation of Assad regime is critical of wiping out ISIS from oil rich Kurdish area. o World community ease expecting India to criticise Assad on user of chemical weapons and barrel bombs on its people, Syria however, had appreciated India's "balanced" stance on crisis. On one hand India highlighted its stance against military solution and on other hand committed $4 million in humanitarian aid in UN sponsored Geneva 2nd conference on 2014

  9. The pragmatist's pivot to India What this article is about? India-Iran relations in the period of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Who is this Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani? o Rafsanjani was a pivotal figure in the country's path since the 1979 revolution: RAN a founding father, o a military leader in the war with Iraq, two times -President. Thus his power and cunningness earned him the name 'Akbar Shah" and "the shark" He passed away on January 8,2017. Rushdie, and was corrupt. But in the last decade of his life, he became a symbol of pragmatism, moderation, and reform. In his last period of life, he was blocked from returning to the presidency, two of his children jailed and thus his mourners who included the supporters of Green Movement were not happy with the current regime.

  10. How he changed the relations with India? "Turning point " for President Rafsanjani was PV Narasimha Rao ,the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Iran since the revolution in September 1993 Iran bailed out India in the UN Commission on Human Rights, blocking a consensus on Kashmir,in March 1994 o Later in October, Rafsanjani cancelled his own visit, concerned at being associated too closely with India while the then o Taliban dominating in Afghanistan with the support of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence was running in the minds of Thus in April 1995, Rafsanjani visited India and it turned out to be a landmark visit. Speaking to over 10,000 Shias at but 5 months later this changed. Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) was preparing once more to censure India on Kashmir. This worried India. both Iran -India. Lucknow's Bara Imambara and promising 10 million for its upkeep Rafsanjani gave an unexpected endorsement of Indian secularism, dodged a Pakistan journalist's question on the Babri Masjid ("I believe there is no need for further propaganda in this regard"), and even praised India's "serious will" on Kashmir while dismissing Pakistan's call for American mediation. He also signed India-Iran-Turkmenistan transit agreement, allowing India to avoid Russian or Ukrainian ports. He wanted a Tehran-Delhi-Beijing axis Indians in turn, were against American criticism of Iran.
