“It is just a club of people to get together and have a good time” words of the American president elect, which is as true as bitter it is. Basically, UN functions as an empty vessel driven by 5 countries of UNSC, moving the vessel in their desired direction. Some of the examples are American invasion of Iraq, tussle of US and Russia over Afghanistan (Which later went on to the main reason for the creation of Taliban based terror), Syrian issue which again is one of the reason for the growth of ISIL. We cannot call UN as an utter failure as: 1) It prevented any more world wars 2) Regulating the activities of countries like US, Russia and China to some extent although it is not able to control it 3) Acts as a forum for member countries to discuss their issues as well as grievances. But in the current scenario, this is not enough where we have multitude of problem added to this is we have “Climate change” issue. Current scenario is, UN must play the role of balancing the emerging powers of Asia, peace to turbulent west Asia and the Middle east as well as the unpredictable President elect. UN with the current level of control will not be able to solve these issues, so all the member countries should formulate a resolution thereby the operational power of UN as well as the UNSC needs to be reformed to match the current scenario of the world
Please review :)

Hi Vignesh your answer is calculative but your didn't mention about new Sec. Gen. of UN how he deal with international issues and what challenges he will face :) please review my answer also
I think, I have mentioned the challenges like Climate change, Turbulence in West Asia and all right? and also my argument is like UN did not have much of operational significance from the start due to its unbalanced power strucutre

Hi vignesh.. I'm following your answers regularly.. Hope I'll start my answer writing soon.. Keep on writing..
You can start writing today itself. I also do not have much idea about this question but still I attempted it. You can also do that :)

Great answer Vignesh... In the second part you could have added points from today's editorial like politically motivated appointments and misconduct of peac keeping forces in Kenya, S Sudan and Liberia
Thank you Shubham. Yes they are great points which could have been added, thank you for pointing out :)

Hi Vignesh ! very nice answer, but in conclusion you are very general not specific in solution as what to do actually and you say that it should balance powers but that was the main reason for its formation but the same issue of balance has been deteriorated seriously. I think you should suggest specific measures too.
Yeah, Actually reforming the UNSC as well as the power sharing of the UN as a whole is the only measure am able to come up :(

Yeah but that reforming is impossible as why anyone would break his toe by his own axe. Absolute power corrupts anyone. We have to either strengthen other regional groups or form a separate bloc for developing nations as bullying and hegemony is tradition of P-5.
Yes you are correct, abolishing the UNSC itself seems to be a better option :)
Good answer Vignesh. Upto point Keep writing. Please review mine too.:)

Hi Vignesh, very nice answer and a 'balanced view'. Good one just one suggestion :- Second part of answer is not covered, reponsibilty and suggestion reg. new secretary.
Yeah, you are right, I missed that part.. :)
United nation was born out of turmoil of 2 devastating world wars. It was established in the hopes that a strong international organization could foster enough cooperation between nations in order to prevent future conflicts. Yes I truly believe that UN is losing its significance in contemporary times due to following reasons: 1. USA did not pay any heed to UNSC dictates before attacking Iraq. 2. Iran and North Korea continued with its nuclear proliferation irrespective of UN sanctions. 3. In the more recent times, terrorist organizations like the ISIS or Boko Haram have brushed aside sustained intervention from the United Nations. 4. Spreading of ISIS in the west Asia and causing rampant brutality, human riots violation. 5. UNSC being unable to respond effectively to situations of international conflicts. On seeing the above situation it seems that UN secretary general is going to face a tough time in restoring global order due to following reasons. 1. Demand for a more balanced regional representation of countries in security council. 2. C/4, African union, Arab group, Pacific SIDS, Caribbean communities are demanding for permanent seat in UNSC. 3. Increased human rights violation, climate change, achievement of SDG’s are the areas of prime concern. 4. Rising refugee crisis in Europe, crisis in African union, balancing Trump future policies. 5. Monopoly of P-5 nations by enjoying veto power. Power is not constant in international politics. The rise and fall of power in history is witness to this fact. I strongly believe the need of establishment of council which is more democratic and capable in its functioning , reflective, representative, and legitimate council which reflects contemporary realities, along with expansion of council.
Nice answer. Conclusion is also good, Keep it up :)

Never write things like this: "Yes I truly believe that UN is losing its significance in contemporary times due to following reasons" this is bad practice. and whenever the keyword is critically analyze always provide both the pros and cons

Hello, very nice answer, many new and different points, I used only common points in my answer. Keep it up!
Portugal's former Prime Minister Antonio Guterres appointed as the 9th secretary general of the United Nations by the general assembly. Major Challenges- 1)Unreliable funding Raising money is a constant problem with so many crises vying for the world’s attention. Many U.N. agencies and humanitarian operations are funded by voluntary contributions, and appeals aren’t getting enough donations. Recently the World Food Program suspended a food voucher program serving more than 1.7 million Syrian refugees after many donors failed to meet their commitments. 2) Unwieldy Organisation The UN has become a sprawling system with 15 autonomous funds and programme and numerous other bodies. There is no central entity to oversee them all. 3)Political Horse trading There is no widespread behind the scenes jockeying for the top jobs in the UN secretariat and UN agencies, not to mention seats in the key bodies like the human rights council and security council. 4)Human Rights Violations, climate change, disaster mitigation, helping victims of conflict, poverty, terrorism are other challenges. No UN secretary General is not ceremonial and insignificant,it is the top diplomat post of the largest international organisation and United Nation Secretary General is the head of the governing and executive body of United nation.....!!!!
Hi Jyoti, Nice points :) You have mentioned lot of data there which is very good. I felt like, the conclusion could have been much better. Apart from that the answer is good. Keep it up :)

Sure, you can write about peace-keeping mission, allegations of molestation, corruption it's leadership is facing. US, being biggest contributor to UN fund (22%), is a biggest critique of it. Unable to enforce countries to take action against climate change, big contributors US, CHINA, EU are not doing much also UN is unable to give climate funds to developing countries. Veto Power :- UN security council's member countries use this power for their political interest. Some good points, UN's agencies :- WHO, UNICEF etc working continuously with govt of african, asian countries to bring equallty. Working to bring peace in the Palestine - Israel region, by bringing resolutions. etc.

Globalization has emerged all the countries at one place so United Nations took place and maintain order among them. As in present scenario where many nations are facing different conflicts like 1. Syria issue civil war in country 2. Israel and Plastien territory conflict over Gaza strip , 3. North Korea enhancing nuclear missile stock, etc here UN is not able to resolve these issues and if it passes any sanction that will not be executed efficiently and effectively. So up to some extend UN is losing its influencing over the different nations. The new Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres appointed on 1 January 2017 he has to face many difficulties from different issues "- 1. Climate change - global warming 2. Terrorism is expanding and making headache to world along with creating non-peace other nations 3. African countries economic crisis and many other issues also. The new Secretary-General of the United Nations can made global order by striking hardly on some major issues like terrorism and global warming and maintaining peace between different nations also

Hi Gaurav thanks for reviewing my answer
"UN was not created to take humanity to heaven but to save it from hell". The main objective of UN was attained to a greater extent by preventing the world from THIRD world war. But UN is losing its significance in the current world and the new Secretary General Antonio Gutteres has to work hard to regain its significance. Some main issues faced by UN are 1) Rise of ISIS in west asian countries 2) Syrian crisis 3) conflict between Israel and palestine 4) Fear of Trump's backing out from Paris agreement 5) Increased refugee crisis in European nations etc. The role of secretary general is crucial at this time to tackle all these problems. Some measures that can be taken by UN are : 1) Increasing seats of UNSC mainly including developing countries , so that they can have active participation.2) increasing budget proprtion for member countries, as large amount of funding solely depends on US 3)Regional level talks with countries tn conflicts by un secretary general to solve issues. To conclude, "Expanded council with more representation may increase support of world community" to regain significance of UN.
Hi Roobitha, Nice answer :) Your points as well as the structure of your answer are really good. See you can also write better answers. Keep writing and reviewing :)

  5. TH: THE TRUMP CHALLENGE TO ANT NIO GUTERRES (GS-2) o Big challenge for new UN Sec. Gen to balance Trumps future policies and restoring credibility of United Nations-Syrian conflict, climate change, North Korea's nukes, Africa's wars and the refugee crisis engulfing Europe. neo Post UN resolution against Israel-Mr. Trump trashed the UN as "just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time." A not-so-veiled threat followed: Not the first time he spoke against UN- anti-UN rhetoric-"The United Nations is not a friend of democracy, it's not a friend of freedom US largest funder to UN-22 per cent of the UN's regular budget. Over 28 per cent of its annual peacekeeping budget of nearly $8 billion also comes from the US. o His stands- strikes at the very heart of multilateralism- vowed to cancel billions in payments to the UN climate change programme-canceling of Paris Agreement- a Chinese Hoax to recent appointments have raised the hackles of environmentalists and human rights activists. 10. TH: TEACHING PEACE TO HUMANITY (GS-4) o Questions about present education and pedagogy- Do we teach cultures and philosophies of peace at schools and universities around the world only to start new wars and conflicts? Is education for peace still a top priority in universities and colleges? does education help us to live a peaceful life and to bring peace around the world? Education by definition is an ethical enterprise-education is more than a way of being; it is an art of becoming Education, according to Bertrand Russell -"a certain outlook on life and the world", Greeks understood paideia as the essence of culture and communication in a good society Peacebuilding through education. the paideic dimension of peacebuilding Peacebuilding-not just about security, but also a long-term process of educating humanity with a special focus on the importance of promoting peace- it is a continual, concrete, and the daily results of education as a learning process The main concern of education is to engender a certain character in human beings and to teach them the nobility of spirit and the moral common ground of actions- it is a pursuit of moral wisdom. o Immanuel Kant, says the aim of education "must be the moralisation of man"-his belief in the moral progress of humanity which is a self-articulated and self-realised process of attaining intellectual maturity
