Introduction
National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is an autonomous body established in November 1994 by the Government of India, to regulate and monitor teacher education in the country. NCTE is responsible for providing recognition to teacher education institutions and regulating their quality, prescribing curriculum and syllabi for different teacher education courses, conducting examinations at the end of these courses and awarding certificates of graduation/post-graduation. Functions of NCTE

The National Council for Teacher Education is the accrediting body for teacher education programs.
Section 17 in National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993
Section 17 in National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993 states the following:
“The National Council for Teacher Education shall be responsible for the development and implementation of procedures to ensure that an institution of higher education offering a teacher preparation program meets the National Standards for Accreditation set forth in this section.”
The National Standards for Accreditation are as follows-
(a) The institution has a sound academic program.
(b) The institution provides an environment that is conducive to the intellectual, professional, and personal growth of its students.
(c) The institution has qualified faculty who demonstrate a commitment to the education of teachers.
(d) The institution has adequate resources to support its teacher education program.
(e) The institution evaluates the effectiveness of its teacher education program and uses this information to improve the program.
