Definition of Inch

An Inch can be defined as the unit of length considered by the US system of measurement. In 1959, an Inch was estimated to be equal to 25.4 millimetres.

The value of a foot used to vary between 250mm and 335mm in the past. The foot is still used widely as a unit of measurement in the United States and many other countries.

Solved Examples: 

  • Show the conversion of 100 cubic inches to feet.

Answer: The value should be divided by 1728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet. 

100 cubic inches = 100÷1728 

Cubic feet = 0.06 

So 100 cubic inches is equal to 0.06 cubic feet 

  • Show which one is greater, 21 inches or 21 feet?

Answer: Both the values are not in the same unit in the above question. To compare both the values, they should be of the same unit. 

Conversion of 252 inches to feet = 

252÷12 = 21 feet 

Therefore, both the values 252 inches and 21 feet are the same. 

  • Radha measured a length of 65 inches on a tape. She wishes to know the value in inches. Help her with the conversion.

Answer: The conversion of inches to feet is done by dividing the value of inches by 12. The quotient is written as feet and the remainder is written as inches. 

Conversion of 65 inches to feet and inches 

65÷12 = 5 feet and 5 inches 

Therefore the value of 65 inches is the same as 5 feet and 5 inches.
