The Swachh Survekshan survey is conducted annually in cities and towns throughout India to measure the levels of cleanliness and sanitation. In keeping with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative, it was launched. According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Swachh Survekshan-2016 survey was conducted for 73 cities in 2016, and the Swachh Survekshan-2017 survey was conducted for 434 cities in January-February 2017. Founded with the objective of making towns and cities more livable and sustainable, Swachh Survekshan is an initiative that works to spread awareness amongst all sections of society.
What is Swachh Survekshan?
Creating cleaner cities and towns is facilitated by Swachh Survekshan, which encourages towns and cities to compete to deliver better services to citizens and to create a sense of healthy competition between them.
An attempt of India to acheive free of open defecation would be achieved through this program as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. By 2020, the survey had grown to cover 4242 cities and was said to be the largest cleanliness survey in the world. The first survey was undertaken in 2016 and covered 73 cities (53 cities with populations over a million, and every state capital); the second survey was conducted in 2019 and covered 76 cities. Each survey was conducted by the Quality Council of India.
What is the Aim of Swacch Survekshan?
With Swachh Survekshans, the primary objective is to achieve large-scale citizen participation, encourage citizen awareness, and make towns and cities a more pleasant place to live. This is for all sections of society. To promote citizen participation on a large scale, Swacch Survekshan was launched. Make sure that the initiatives taken toward garbage-free and open defecation-free cities are sustainable. It ensures that a third party certifies the results. A further objective was to institutionalize existing systems through online processes under Swachh Survekshan.
Swacch Survekshan 2022
Around 3,000 assessors of Ipsos Research Private Limited, the assessment agency contracted by the ministry, were involved in the launch of the Swachh Survekshan 2022 survey. We are ready to assess the performance of cities, thanks to our limited company. Aiming to capture the city initiatives that contribute to the overall welfare and well-being of frontline sanitation workers, Swachh Survekshan 2022 has been designed with “People First” as its guiding principle.
Young and old alike can participate in the survey, which will be geared towards enhancing their contribution to upholding cleanliness in urban areas. In comparison with last year, there will be more assessors conducting the on-field assessment.
On December 6, 2021, the MoHUA launched another new indicator, called Swachh Technology Challenge. Four categories of innovative solutions were submitted under this challenge by individuals/organisations and startups. They are as follows:
 Social inclusion
 Zero dumps (solid waste management)
Plastic waste management
Enabling transparency through technology
Brand Ambassador of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan
Among the accolades, Narendra Modi has recently bestowed upon Pune industrialist Adar Poonawalla for his major initiative toward a cleaner and greener Pune is his nomination as a brand ambassador for the Swachh Bharat mission. This first-of-a-kind public-private partnership for efficient and scientific waste management was launched in January 2016 with an initial investment of Rs. 100 crore. Serum Institute of India took on this environmentally sustainable initiative to make Pune a more liveable city.
As described by the project managers, this initiative is coordinated through an app (myAPCC) designed specifically to report and resolve garbage. Apps for this initiative can be downloaded for free from Google Play Store and Apple Play Store.
Thanks to the active participation of PMC and citizens, Pune has been ranked among the top 15 cities on the Swachh Bharat Survekshan. Teachers will make the initiative known to students in various school systems. There is a need to encourage segregation in Pune to make the city more livable.
Logo and Slogan of Swacch Bharat
Besides Mahatma Gandhi’s spectacles, the logo shows the National Tricolor and the name “Swachh Bharat” on each glass, which symbolizes the strive for a clean India by all the citizens. To make India a clean nation, even one Indian can contribute by taking every measure possible to make Ek Kadam Swachhata Ki Aur a reality.
Ms Bhagayasri Sheth of Rajkot, Gujarat won the contest for the slogan of Swacch Bharat. Shri Anant Khasbardar of Kolhapur, Maharashtra won the contest for Logo design. The cash award for Mr Khasbardar was Rs.50,000/- and for Ms Bhagyasri it was Rs.25,000/-. An award ceremony will take place on October 2, 2014, in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will give away the prizes.
Conclusion
With its annual survey, conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), the Swachh Bharat Mission has managed to mobilize people, resources, and authorities in the effort to prove that their city is the cleanest in India and that sustainable practices are being developed by both citizens and urban local bodies (ULBs). Through Swachh Survekshan, urban governance has been able to be agile and more committed to achieving social outcomes. With its roots in “peer pressure” that can be generated through the active participation of people, agility and competitiveness, this framework can be used to transform governance in many other areas.
