On March 4, 2020, the “PRAGYAN CONCLAVE 2020” was kicked off at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, a two-day Indian Army International Seminar organised by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS). The conference, which takes place from November 25 to 28 in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, gathers a cross-domain group of national and international experts to discuss the perplexing subject of ‘Changing Characteristics of Land Warfare and Its Influence on the Military. The first-ever Strategic Defence Exhibition was inaugurated by Raksha Rajya Mantri (RRM), Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Chief of the Army Staff, General MM Naravane, Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General SK Saini, along with other military personalities from the Ministry of Defence.

The conference provided a forum for discussions about new ideas, viewpoints, and narratives that define the “New Age Warfare,” which is now seeing a transformation in both character and battlespace thanks to the use of new “means” to attain the “ends.” Shripad Yesso Naik, RRM Shri, gave the Keynote Address. He stressed the importance of viewing national security changes from a broader perspective to transform the Armed Forces. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Department of Military Affairs (DMA) were mentioned as important steps forward. In his Inaugural Address, the Chief of Army Staff referred to the ‘nature of combat as being “constant” and that they are “changing.” According to the Chief of Army Staff, the nature of war is “continuous.” With the advent of technology, the Armed Forces must be flexible and keep up with the continual transformation. He also pointed out that CDS development has given further incentive for ‘joint manship’ between the three Services.

Subjects Covered During Pragyan Conclave 2021

On the first day of the Seminar, two major subjects were addressed in two sessions by the subject specialists. The first session, “Evolving Warfare: An Understanding of the Changing Realm,” focused on future warfare and how it will impact the military in terms of possibilities and prospects. The second session, which was held on July 10, focused on “The Technological Revolution: A Seminal Challenge,” in which the discussions focused on the optics of Information Warfare in multi-domain operations, cyber and space warfare, and the consequences of AI and Robotics in new domains of battle. The second day of the Seminar will concentrate on ‘Transformation in Battle Spaces’ and ‘Hybrid/Sub-Conventional Warfare.’

On this occasion, the Chief of Army Staff authorised The Field Marshal Manekshaw Competition on National Security as a flagship activity of CLAWS to stimulate strategic thinking in the country’s youth.
