Boric Acid or Boric Acid Powder

A monobasic Lewis acid is called as the Boric Acid or Boric acid powder which has the following Chemical Formula– H3BO3/ BH3O3/H3BO3/B(OH)3. Boric acid or Boric acid Powder is also called boracic acid, orthoboric acid, acidium boricium, hydrogen borate. This acid is weak and has antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Boric acid powder or Boric acid is water soluble and has no visible odour. Under normal circumstances, this exists in the form of a white powder or as a colourless crystal. It can be formed by the reaction of borax with hydrochloric acid. The boric acid was first made by Wilhelm Homberg from borax compound.

Properties Of Boric Acid Or Boric Acid Powder (H3BO3)

Boric Acid Formula-  H3BO3 Boiling Point- 158°C Melting Point- 300°C Molecular Weight or Molar Mass- 61.82 g/mol Density- 1.436 g/cm3

Structure of Boric Acid (Boric Acid Powder)

Each of the boric acid molecules has boron-oxygen single (B-O) bonds. The boron atom covers the central place and is linked with 3 hydroxide groups. The molecule has trigonal planar geometry of boric acid.

Formation of H3BO3

The easiest preparation of preparing boric acid is making borax react with a mineral acid of any type like hydrochloric acid. The chemical reaction of formation is as follows: Na₂B₄O.10H₂O + 2HCl → 4H₃BO₃ + 5H₂O + 2NaCl Boric acid is also formed as the by-product of the hydrolysis of boron trihalides and diborane.

What can be the Uses of Boric Acid?

The boric acid use is given below: As a Cleaning Agent: Boric Acid can be used as a cleanser, disinfectant, mold-killer, stain- remover, and deodorizer. In Pest Control Business: Boric acid also used in pest control business and is one of the most effective and natural ways to get rid of the pest in the home. Boric acid  can kill cockroaches, fleas, termites, silverfish, beetles, wood borers, ants etc. As a Medicine: Boric acid is used as an antiseptic for the treatment of minor cuts and burns in the body. Also, this compound is used in medical dressings. Too dilute solutions of boric acid can be used as an eyewash. It is used as an antibacterial property, boric acid can also be used for the treatment of acne in humans. Boric acid in its powdered form, sprayed into socks and shoes to prevent athlete’s foot. This is important to notice that boric acid can prove poisonous if consumed or inhaled in relatively large quantities.

Boric Acid Poisoning:

Boric Acid can cause chronic poisoning. When a person takes powdered boric acid, they get chronic (acute) boric acid poisoning. Ingesting a sufficient dose of boric acid causes dire in many positions of the body. After taking boric acid, its damage to the esophagus and stomach goes through for many weeks. It can appear in months and achieve to death.
