UNDERSTANDING THE LIVER

The liver is an important organ located in the abdominal area that performs significant functions like blood filtering and detoxification of the organisms.

The liver is one of the major organs in the body located in the vertebrates that performs organism detoxification, blood filtering, and other important bodily functions. The current paper has discussed the functions of the liver in the human body along with its location in the human anatomy. Further, the study has outlined the common size of the liver under a stable medical condition along with the issues of oversized livers in the human body. Additionally, the key liver problems are identified in the present study along with their impact on the human body and generic medications for countering them successfully.

What is the liver?

The liver is a meaty body part that performs important body functions like filtering the blood, synthesizing proteins, and detoxifying the organisms successfully. The liver also collects all the necessary biochemicals in the body to allow the body to successfully run the digestion process and foster growth. In the human body, the liver is commonly located below the diaphragm and on the right upper side of the abdominal area. According to the human anatomy, the liver can be referred to as a gland that can make bodily chemicals according to the need of the body.

What are the common liver functions?

The preliminary function of the liver in the body is to filter the blood from the essential digestive tracts and pass them to the body according to the needs. Apart from that, the liver appears as one of the significant parts of the excretory system with its constant production of bile within the body. On the other hand, the liver is responsible for excreting “bilirubin”, “hormones”, “cholesterol” and “drugs” from the body. The primary liver functions also involve essential body tasks like maintaining the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in the body and making it enzyme activated with them.

The concept of the normal liver size

The liver is considered to be the largest body part within the human body that increases its size along with the development and growth of the body. The average liver size for a grown man is 10.5 cm and for women, it is 7 cm. A comparatively smaller liver than the average size is commonly accepted as a liver dysfunction for both men and women. Further, the average weight of a liver in a male body is 1400 to 1500 grams whereas the women’s liver weighs 1200 to 1400 grams in general.

Key symptoms of liver problems in the body

In the human body, the liver is sensitive to different types of diseases and issues that eventually impact human health at its core. A few common symptoms can be identified by proper medical intervention to detect the issues of the liver within the body. The key symptoms of liver problems are listed below.

  • Yellowish colour of the skin and the eyes
  • Swelling ankles and legs
  • Constant abdominal pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Pale stool colour
  • Vomiting tendency and constant nausea

Impact of liver problems in the body

Issues in the liver can directly damage the liver system and can cause acute illness to the body by affecting it from its core. Liver problems cause infection, bleeding, and electrolyte deficiencies in the body which eventually makes the body vulnerable to developing other chronic diseases in the process. Apart from that, liver failure can cause acute illness and chronic diseases like liver cancer which eventually leads to death.

Common medical diagnoses for liver problems

The fatality of liver disease in the body can be minimized with the help of proper medical diagnoses and tests. The common medical interventions for detecting and curing liver problems are discussed below.

  • Testing the liver enzymes with frequent blood tests
  • Conducting imagining tests like Ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI.
  • Running liver biopsy

Conclusion

Liver problems have the potential to make bodies vulnerable to other potential chronic diseases that can make people sick and even lead to untimely death. Issues like alcohol consumption and inconsistencies in the daily diets can cause potential liver damage to the body. It can further lead to electrolyte dysfunctions, chronic fatigue, and even liver cancer in the human body. Further, it can be said that frequent test runs and checking of blood enzymes can be helpful in terms of managing liver problems and treating them successfully.
