Belt-Pulley

Belt-Pulley is like Chains and gears that transmit power from one shaft to another shaft that uses belts and ropes when the distance between the two shafts is large.

Table of Content
  •

Introduction

Chain is used for long distances and gears are used for shorter distances. Positive drive used for Gear Drive as there is no slip. Ropes and belts are used for transmitting power because of Friction, this friction acts as friction between the Belt and the Pulley. A belt drive is not a positive drive due to the slip and creeps in belts.

V belt pulley

V belt Pulley is a belt drive mechanism that consists of a Driver and Driven Pulley, two keys, One Belt and a Motor mechanism shaft. V-belt pulleys are a kind of device that transmits power between V-belt and Axles. This is a Mechanical Linkage with a Trapezoidal Cross-section. This device is used to resist slipping and provides High-speed power Transmission. A V-belt pulley is used for transmitting power between two parallel axles. There are other types of Pulleys such as round belts and flat belt pulleys. V-belt pulley is a geometry grove located at the circumference of the pulley. V-belt Pulley is creating a strong driving force and achieving 95% of transmission efficiency. V-belts were developed for automobile transmission from the Crankshaft. Transmissions of V-belt are an upgraded transmission system than flat and round belt transmission. This provides great speed, fraction and load capacity and also resist slipping. Transmission efficiency of V-belt increases with heavyweight and Efficiency decreases with lightweight. For accommodating a multiple drives V-belt pulley placed in a side-by-side configuration and multiple grooves may be featured by a single pulley. It has several advantages and disadvantages. Major advantages of V-belt Pulley include access at a minimal distance and need no lubrication. It is an extremely reliable drive mechanism and has gradual gear that can be easily identified. This has a wide range of speed and horsepower and helps in preventing overload. The disadvantage of V-belt Pulley is it works at a Limited Temperature of 140°C. This V-belt Pulley is larger than other Belt drives. Another major disadvantage is Center distance between pulleys is limited and this drive is more expensive than round belt and flat belt drives.

Belt pulley

Belt pulleys are used as transmission of power in automotive engines such as cars, trucks and buses. They are also used for air compressors and in agricultural tools. It is also designed for rotational movement of large machines with tons of weight such as Treadmills, washing machines, refrigerators and Winches. There are different types of pulleys depending upon their designs and functions. Open Belt Drive pulley includes a shaft that rotates in the same direction and these shafts are placed in parallel directions. Crossed Belt drive pulley helps to transmit more power but has a limited speed. This sometimes results in the tear of the belt, in which the pulley shaft rotates opposite to the Pulley.  The Fast and Loose Cone Pulley is faster than the other two pulleys. Fast pulley mounted on shafts and jointed but loose pulley runs freely and does not transmit any power. This particular pulley is suitable for multiple machines that drive power to a single source.

Belt and pulley

Stepped Cone Pulley is also known as speed Cone and includes more than one pulley. This pulley is used for the application of changing gear and accelerator, where speed of the driver changes. This pulley belt is used for different speed acceleration. Jockey Pulley is used for increasing an angle of contract in driving belts. This also helps to increase belt tension and offers a high-velocity ratio. Complex pulley system includes a tackle and block system that contains more than one drum and each drum consists of more than two wheels that rotate in the same axle. Compound pulley system includes both movable and fixed pulleys that help to make the weight lighter.

Types of pulley belts

Pulley Belt is of four types of Flat belt that is used for low power and high speed. V belt is used for shafts that are at a distance of fewer than 2 meters. It has limited speed and high power. Circular Belt is used for distances more than 5 meters and transmits high power. Timing belts are used for internal Combustion of engines and transmit powers. These belts are differentiated based on their limitation of speed and power.

Conclusion

Belt Pulleys are used for transmitting power from one source to another in a drive mechanism. That generally used roles and gears for pulling and used in automotive engines such as in cars, trucks and buses. There are different types of pulleys based on their speed, power and distance between the shafts. Such as V-belt Pulley is used for shafts that are at a distance of 2 meters. The advantage of V-pulley is it has a wide range of speeds but this belt pulley is more expensive than other pulleys. There are four types of belt pulley such as round belt, flat belt, V-belt and timing belt pulley depending upon their power and speed.
