Why in news?
- UNESCO is commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Hague Convention.
Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in Armed Conflict:
- 1954: It was signed at The Hague, Netherlands, and entered into force in 1956.
- It is the first international treaty that focuses exclusively on the protection of cultural property in armed conflict.
- Cultural Property covers:
- movable or immovable property of great importance to the cultural heritage.
- buildings whose main and effective purpose is to preserve or exhibit the movable cultural property.
- The protection of cultural property is important because such property reflects the life, history and identity of communities and link people’s past with their present and future.
- India is a party to the Hague Convention.
