India’s largest energy company, NTPC Ltd, has been working on the largest MW floating solar PV project and recently commissioned it, supposedly of 25MW and situated in the Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh. This project is said to be notified by the Government of India in 2018 and is the very initial solar project to be set under the Flexibilisation Scheme. Shri Sanjay Madan, RED (WR2 & SR) NTPC inaugurated the Solar PV project along with the presence of Shri Diwakar Kaushik, CGM – Simhadri, and Shri Mohit Bhargava, ED – RE NTPC.
Overview of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)
National Thermal Power Corporation, popularly known as NTPC Limited, is an Indian corporation. It is responsible for electricity and allied activities generation. The corporation is statutory and under the ownership of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and engulfed in the Companies Act of 1956. The headquarters are located in New Delhi, and the core function is to distribute and generate electric power for Indian state Electricity boards. NTPC also takes up turnkey and consultation projects, primarily having project management, engineering, operation, and construction management and operation of the power plant. NTPC also had an involvement in gas and oil exploration and mining of coal.
National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has 67,907 MW generating electric power. The company has an approximate total national capacity of 16% and contributes to total power generation of over 25% due to focusing on operating at a high-efficiency level. The production of electricity by NTPC is 25 billion units.55 Power stations are currently operational by NTPC. These include 24 coal, 7 cycle gas/ liquid fuel, 2 Hydro, 11 solar, and 1 wind project. It also has 9 coal and 1 gas station by joint ventures.
Floating solar PV project
A solar PV project, photovoltaic power station, solar farm, or solar power plant is a large-scale photovoltaic power system, also called a PV system, made for merchant power supply. They are quite different from building-mounted and other solar power decentralised at ground level. It has a local user for several users. The utility-scale solar generic expression is used for the description of this project.
The power source of the solar project is through the photovoltaic modules responsible for converting light to electricity in a direct fashion. This, however, should not be confused with solar power that is concentrated. The other large-scale solar generation technology uses heat to drive various conventional generator systems. These both have their pros and cons, but the PV system has seen a surge in use until now.
NTPC commissioned a floating solar PV project and other power projects
The installation of this MW floating solar PV project has a very innovative and unique anchoring design and is widespread in an RW reservoir over 7 acres. This project has the capability to generate electricity for more than 1 lakh solar PV modules. This project will certainly help around 7000 households and guarantee a minimum of 46,000 tons of CO2 are kept at an optimum length every year up until the project’s life. The project saves almost 1,364 million litres of water per annum. This will suffice the water requirement yearly for over 6,700 households.
The Simhadri Station, a 2000 MW coal-based Station, is the first power project that implements an open sea intake from the Bay of Bengal and has been operational for over 2 years. The installed capacity is almost 66900 MW, and the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has 29 Renewable projects and 71 power stations. NTPC aims to install renewable energy of 60 gigawatts (GW) by the year 2032. NTPC is India’s first energy company that has a declaration of energy-related goals as part of the High-level Dialogue in energy (HLDE). The NTPC has a capacity of 17 GW under construction and 5 GW of renewable energy projects. The electricity, which is an unhindered electricity supply through eco-friendly projects at good prices, has been a focus of NTPC.
Conclusion
National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), popularly known as NTPC Limited, is an Indian corporation. It is responsible for electricity and allied activities generation. The MW floating solar project was featured by the Government of India in 2018 and engulfed under the Flexibilisation Scheme. This installation of a floating solar system has a unique anchor and is widespread over a diverse area in an RW reservoir of 75 acres. The floating solar project has an immense capability to generate electricity and possibly for over 1 lakh PV modules. This helped to light 7,000 households. This project will also guarantee a minimum of 46,000 tons of CO2 are kept at an optimum length every year up until the project’s life.
