In 2019, the Bureau of Police Research and Development, short BPR&D, organised a national conference for two days in New Delhi. It was inaugurated at the headquarters of this department situated at Mahipalpur. This particular conference was related to the criminal activities and radicalisation in jails of India. Many key issues were focused on during the entire conference. There are three major things included in correctional administration, which you will find in the article.
Correctional Administration
Correctional administration is a program responsible for preparing individuals to manage and plan programs and institutional facilities for rehabilitating and housing businesses in the private or public sector. The Correctional administration also emphasises converting the prison as one of the centres for re-formation, so the Correctional Administration” in Prison reforms. The three things included in correctional administration are as follows:
- Involvement of the community
- Programme of the welfare of trials or convicts
- Rehabilitation following the release
Issues focused by the conference
Some major issues were the key focus of the conference held in New Delhi. These issues were:

- To formulate and analyse the protection and security standards present for the prison staff.
- To develop an interdisciplinary platform for people to exchange and express their experiences on prison reforms.
Challenges addressed at the conference.
Some major challenges were addressed during the conference. This included the following:
- Prison overcrowding
- In the presence of inadequate infrastructure in prison
- Aggravation of all the sufferings which are faced during the process
- A huge number of cases undertrial
- Streamlining and rehabilitating convicts to make their entrance back into the society

- Safety of children and women prisoners
- Shortage of staff and funds to provide a good administration in the prison
Rights of Prisoners
In India, article 21 of the constitution states the right to life. This is one of the fundamental rights of Indian citizens. For a prisoner, imprisonment is a punishment, so the prison conditions should not be another punishment for the convicts. Imprisonment can certainly impact other rights, including freedom of movement. However, prisoners’ fundamental freedoms and human rights should not be restricted.
Key Issues faced in Indian Prison
Certain issues are faced in the Indian presence. Some of them are described below.
Overcrowding
One of the major concerns in Indian prisons is overcrowding. It has always been a major concern because of our national crime record bureau statistics. In this, overcrowding in prison can strain the infrastructure, spread diseases, hamper correctional services, and lead to different types of problems for the administration that can also include an increase in incidents of violence. Overcrowding can also lead to lack of distribution of security, food and gardening in prisons.
Unhygienic and poor conditions of living
As a major impact of overcrowding in prison, it has led to very unhygienic and poor living conditions in prison. There are still many prisons around the country facing unsatisfactory living conditions even though there have been reforms in the present. The poor facilities for sanitary can also lead to serious side effects on prisoners’ health.
Deaths in Jail
Another major issue faced in prison is death. As per the national crime record bureau, the unnatural death of people in prison has been doubled. So, this is another matter of concern.
Staff Shortage
Shortage of staff present in Indian presence is another matter of concern. Especially there has been a shortage in medical staff present in Indian business, which has led to different consequences.
Torture and sexual abuse
Another major issue in the Indian presence is torture and sexual abuse. There has been an increase in such incidents as well. This is one of the results for having poor security and present management. A lack of security measures can also lead to violent clashes, and it can also lead to deaths.
Conclusion
The national conference on criminal activities and radicalisation in sales that happened in 2019 has led to a major discussion related to the conditions of Indian prisons.
