Rights of Prisoners

In India, article 21 of the constitution states the right to life. This is one of the fundamental rights of Indian citizens. For a prisoner, imprisonment is a punishment, so the prison conditions should not be another punishment for the convicts. Imprisonment can certainly impact other rights, including freedom of movement. However, prisoners’ fundamental freedoms and human rights should not be restricted.

Key Issues faced in Indian Prison

Certain issues are faced in the Indian presence. Some of them are described below.

Overcrowding

One of the major concerns in Indian prisons is overcrowding. It has always been a major concern because of our national crime record bureau statistics. In this, overcrowding in prison can strain the infrastructure, spread diseases, hamper correctional services, and lead to different types of problems for the administration that can also include an increase in incidents of violence. Overcrowding can also lead to lack of distribution of security, food and gardening in prisons.

Unhygienic and poor conditions of living

As a major impact of overcrowding in prison, it has led to very unhygienic and poor living conditions in prison. There are still many prisons around the country facing unsatisfactory living conditions even though there have been reforms in the present. The poor facilities for sanitary can also lead to serious side effects on prisoners’ health.

Deaths in Jail

Another major issue faced in prison is death. As per the national crime record bureau, the unnatural death of people in prison has been doubled. So, this is another matter of concern.

Staff Shortage

Shortage of staff present in Indian presence is another matter of concern. Especially there has been a shortage in medical staff present in Indian business, which has led to different consequences.

Torture and sexual abuse

Another major issue in the Indian presence is torture and sexual abuse. There has been an increase in such incidents as well. This is one of the results for having poor security and present management. A lack of security measures can also lead to violent clashes, and it can also lead to deaths.
