What Is The Importance Of Gurpurab?

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Ji. It is a very sacred festival of the Sikh community. It is celebrated in the Kartik month on the Guru Purnima.

According to the mythology, Guru Nanak was born in 1469 on the Puranmashi of Kattak. This is why it is celebrated in the Karthik (lunar month). It is a very prominent festival as the Sikhs believe that the beliefs and preachings of Guru Nanak Ji constructed the ideologies of Sikhism that people follow today.

People remember him for his most real contribution to humanity. Also, several states of India celebrate his birthday as a public holiday. And on the day of Guru Parab, people remember his preachings and recite them.

Celebrations And Rituals On The Day Of Gurupurab. 

How is Gurpurab celebrated? The festivities begin with the cleaning of the gurdwaras. People clean their houses. They decorate the gurudwaras and homes two days before the Gurupurab. 

The gurdwaras hold the Akhand path of the Guru Granth Sahib, which is of 48 hours. And on this auspicious day, people carry processions from the gurdwara in the morning. This is known as Prabhat fairies. They spread the holy message through their hymns. These hymns contain the preachings of the Guru Granth Ji.

Apart from singing the hymns, the devotees get involved in early morning prayer. This is termed as Asa-Ki-Vaar. It is followed with gratitude by Katha and Kirtan of Nanak Ji’s teachings.

Importance Of Langars

The devotees cook the Kadha Prasad and offer it to Guru. It is then distributed to the needy and the people. It is a significant part of the Gurupuran festival. 

The community is involved in the preparation of Langars. It is done selflessly to serve the people in need. It is the most accepted way to get Guru’s blessings. 

The prayer and other sessions in the gurdwara start at 120 a.m. at midnight. This is believed to be the time when Guru Nanak Ji was born. Devotees celebrate it with Langars, Pheris, kirtan and Katha. They circulate the teachings of the Guru.

What Does Gurupurab Mean?

The Sikh community celebrates Guru every year on the full moon day of Kartik. People celebrate the festival for three days. They start cleaning the house and decorate it with lights, flowers etc. They decorate the Gurudwara beautifully to carry out prayers and other rituals together. 

Guru Nanak Jayanti signifies the remembrance of the Guru. All the ten gurus are celebrated in this religion. They worship the Gurus of the Khalsa Panth. The four most celebrated ones are the birth of Guru Gobind Guru Nanak and the Martyrdom days of  Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Arjan Dev.

The devotees unfailingly visit the gurdwaras to see blessings from the gurus and offer prayers. People of the Sikh community believe in living with harmony and brotherhood. They follow the teachings Of Guru Nanak in their day to day life.
