A recent WHO study on urgent global health challenges for the next decade has just been released, and it makes for some sobering reading. The report identifies a range of issues that ministers of health should be prioritized over the next ten years in order to safeguard the public’s health. From climate change to antimicrobial resistance, the challenges outlined are varied and complex. Urgent Global Health Challenges For the Next Decade:
WHO recently published a study that provides an overview of the public health challenges facing the WHO Member States over the next decade. WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “This is a wake-up call for all of us. We must do everything in our power to address these challenges head-on.” The study provides a matter for ministries of health to consider as they plan for the future. WHO will continue to support the Member States in their efforts to improve the health of their populations.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) :
NCDs are the leading cause of death globally, accounting for more than 70% of all deaths. WHO is working with the Member States to prevent and control NCDs through a comprehensive approach that includes tobacco control, promotion of physical activity, a healthy diet and reduction of harmful use of alcohol. WHO is also supporting countries to implement policies and programmes to reduce the risk of NCDs, including through the WHO NCD Action Plan 2013-2020.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) :
AMR is a major global health threat. WHO is working with Member States to address AMR through surveillance, prevention and control programmes. WHO is also supporting countries to develop national action plans on AMR.
Health emergencies :
WHO is working with the Member States to strengthen health systems and increase preparedness for health emergencies. WHO is also supporting countries to develop national plans for health emergencies.
Climate change :
Climate change is a major global health threat. WHO is working with Member States to address climate change through surveillance, prevention and control programmes. WHO is also supporting countries to develop national action plans on climate change.
Universal health coverage (UHC) :
WHO is working with the Member States to accelerate progress toward UHC. WHO is also supporting countries to develop national strategies for UHC.
Digital health :
Digital health is a major global health opportunity. WHO is working with Member States to address digital health through surveillance, prevention and control programmes. WHO is also supporting countries to develop national action plans on digital health.
Epidemic Preparations:
WHO is working with the Member States to strengthen health systems and increase preparedness for epidemics. WHO is also supporting countries to develop national plans for epidemic preparedness.
