The Eleven United States Nationalities and Their Cultures

This country has been referred to as the United States of America for hundreds of years. However, novelist and writer Colin Woodard asserts that neither the country nor its 50 states are united. Woodward claims that his study proves America is actually made up of 11 different nations since he has examined voting trends, demography, and public opinion polls dating back to the time of the first settlers.

1. Yankeedom

Citizens in the North – eastern states & the industrialised Midwest, which Puritans established, are more at ease with government control. They place higher importance on education & the collective good than comparable areas. Yankeedom has a natural ally in this region, encompassing northern New Jersey and New York City. Anti-regulation sentiment may be prevalent in the Midwest and Midlands. The “American Heartland” culture emerged in the Midlands, a settlement founded by English Quakers. The government is distrusted, and conservative political views are common.

2. New Netherlands

Woodard says that the Netherlands was the most developed culture in the Western globe when New York was formed, so it’s no surprise that the area has been a global business centre. This is also the area that is most welcoming of historically marginalised groups.

3. Deep South

People in the Deep South have a strong sense of community and hold grudges against any form of government meddling in their lives. Abolitionist historian James Woodard contends that Barbados-born English enslavers laid the foundations for the Deep South’s enslaved population to flourish. Because of the society’s strong social structure, the government has a hard time passing legislation restricting individual liberties. South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia make up the Deep South.

4. The Left Coast

In Woodard’s view, the Left Coast is the most persistent supporter of New England idealism because it supported New England utopianism and Appalachian freedom of expression and adventure. Montana, Wyoming, and Utah make up the Far West, including all three of these states. The European Union and the United States of America. In the early days of their existence, they “resented” the Eastern interests that controlled investment in the industry. Located in the “Far West” are the states of Idaho and Montana, as well as Nebraska and Kansas.

5. New France

In New France, the participation of the government in economic affairs is not a novel concept. Liberals in the Deep South stand out from other political groupings due to their tenacity, tolerance, and willingness to embrace government involvement in economic matters.

6. Tidewater

Young English nobles created Tidewater in the Chesapeake Gulf and North Carolina region. The area, which began as a medieval culture that tolerated slavery, placed great importance on regard for government & tradition. Tidewater is in decay, according to Woodard, partly since “it has been chewed away by the increasing government halos encircling D.C. & Norfolk.”

7. Greater Appalachia

Greater Appalachia includes Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, & Texas. Greater Appalachia is regarded as the region of hillbillies & rednecks because it was colonised by immigrants from the military conflict borders of North Ireland, north England, & the Scottish lowland. Appalachia, according to Woodard, emphasises personal independence and certain liberty and is “very sceptical of lowland aristocracy & Yankee societal engineers equally.”

8. El Norte

El Norte is dominated by Hispanic culture. As per Woodard, El Norte represents a place distinct from the remainder of America since it is made up of the borders of the Spanish kingdom. The area is dominated by Hispanic culture, & the region prioritises individualism, self-sufficiency, & hard labour above everything. El Norte encompasses Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

9. The Midlands

The Midlands, which extended from the Quaker area west across Iowa & into larger populated portions of the Midwest, was “pluralistic and oriented all around the middle class.” Official meddling is not encouraged, and ethnically and ideological correctness are not priorities.

10. The Far West

The Great Plains & Mountains West was constructed by industry in response to severe, sometimes unfriendly weather. Far Westerners are fiercely libertarian and sceptical of large organisations, such as railways, corporations, and the national government.

11. First Nation

The few remaining First Nations peoples – Native Americans who have never surrendered their territory to European immigrants — live primarily in the cold Arctic north regions of Canada & Alaska. They own their territories, although their population is approximately 300,000.

Conclusion

The Fourth of July is a national holiday in the United States to honour the country’s victory against the British Empire during the American Revolutionary War. From the 13 original colonies (which eventually became the 50 states we know today), the United States was divided during this period. New Netherland in New York City is a “materialistic” area. In Woodard’s words, “New Netherland” is a commercial culture because of its theological pluralism and unshakeable adherence to the right to free inquiry and conscience.

Keeping in mind that a country is more than the sum of its parts is essential. Alternatively, it could be a nation with several distinct tribes or groups. “American Nations” author Colin Woodard believes eleven different civilisations have inhabited North America throughout history (Canada is included in his overall analysis). U.S. citizens’ rights and the roles and obligations of their federal government have been hot topics in recent months.
