Oldest Stadium:
Eden Garden
Eden Gardens is situated in the middle of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is the country’s oldest and largest stadium in terms of capacity, and is also known as the home of Indian cricket. Since its restoration prior to the 2011 World Cup, it can currently hold roughly 68,000 people. The stadium has previously been used for football, but cricket is the primary use. It is the Indian cricket ground that has hosted the most international matches. In January 1934, India met England in a Test match at Eden Gardens for the first time. The 1987 World Cup final, when it became only the second venue to hold the WC final, is one of the most famous matches held thus far. It also hosted the 1996 World Cup semi-final and the 2016 T20 World Cup final, which West Indies won following an extraordinary last over in which Carlos ‘Remember the name’ Brathwaite hit four sixes in four balls off Ben Stokes.
Sourav Ganguly will undoubtedly be the most famous cricketer whose home ground is Eden Gardens. The left-hander was a successful captain and one of the best limited-overs openers in India’s history. He also has a stand in the stadium named after him. The ground is owned by the Indian Army, which is a unique feature. The tremendous robbery India pulled off on the Australians in a Test match in 2001 to win a game after being forced to follow-on thanks to the heroics of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman with the bat, and Harbhajan Singh with the ball. With his stunning 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, Rohit Sharma set a new record for the highest ever score in a One-Day International game. The Bengal Ranji team and the Kolkata franchise in the Indian T20 League both play at the stadium.
Largest and biggest Stadium:
The Narendra Modi Stadium
The Narendra Modi Stadium is a cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, India, located within the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave . By 2022, it will have a capacity of 132,000 spectators, making it the world’s largest stadium. The stadium, which holds Test, ODI, and T20I cricket matches, is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association.
Built in 1983, the stadium was refurbished for the first time in 2006. It became the city’s primary site for international matches. The stadium was closed and dismantled in 2015, and it will be totally rebuilt by February 2020 at a cost of Rs 800 crore (US$100 million).
Apart from cricket, the stadium has hosted a number of events organised by the Gujarat government. It has held matches during the Cricket World Cups in 1987, 1996, and 2011. The stadium has hosted 14 Tests, 24 ODIs, and 6 T20I matches as of 2021.
The Gujarat Cricket Association renamed the stadium the Narendra Modi Stadium on February 24, 2021, after the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, a Gujarat native who was also the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association (2009-2014) and the state’s chief minister from 2001 to 2014. It hosted India and England in the first ever pink ball test match on February 24, 2021.
Conclusion:
The stadiums of any country indicate the level of commitment to the nation’s sports community and the value it places on sports culture. India, in particular, boasts numerous world-class stadiums that host numerous national and international sporting events.
