Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world, with players of all ages participating. It is also a popular spectator sport, with star players competing in glamorous tournaments that millions of fans around the world watch on TV. Women’s matches are as popular as men’s, and tennis is one of the few professional sports in which women can earn the same amount of money as men. Singles matches are played between two people, while doubles matches are played between two teams of two people. A racket (also spelled racquet) is used by each player to hit a felt-covered ball over a net into their opponent’s side of a court. When a player’s opponent is unable to return a shot, the player wins a point.
What is Tennis?
Lawn tennis is also known as lawn tennis is a sport in which two opposing players (singles) or pairs of players (doubles) use tautly strung rackets to hit a ball of predetermined size, weight, and bounce over a net on a rectangular court. Points are awarded to a player or team whenever the opponent fails to return the ball correctly within the court’s dimensions. Tennis is played according to rules set by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the sport’s world governing body.
Tennis was originally known as lawn tennis, and it is still formally known as such in the United Kingdom, because it was played on grass courts by Victorian gentlemen and ladies. It is now played on a number of different surfaces. They are the game’s origins; it can be traced back to a 12th–13th-century French handball game called jeu de paume (“game of the palm”), from which a complex indoor racket-and-ball game called real tennis evolved. This ancient game is still played to some extent and is known as real tennis in the United Kingdom, court tennis in the United States, and royal tennis in Australia.
Tennis terminology
It’s best to start explaining tennis terminology with the fundamentals of the game. The following are some of the most basic tennis terms, which apply to all levels of competition.
Point – In tennis, a point is the smallest scoring unit. A point lasts from the time the ball is successfully served until it is removed from play.
Game – A game is a series of points during which the same player continues to serve. Except when the game reaches deuce, games are usually won when a player scores four points (see main scoring section below).
Set – The next unit of scoring in tennis after a game. A set is won when a player has won six games and is at least two games ahead of their opponent. A tiebreak is usually used when a set is tied at 6-6. (see tiebreak in the scoring section below).
Match – The term “match” refers to an entire tennis match. Matches are usually played in best of five or three sets, and when a player wins, the call ‘game, set, and match’ is made.
Service – In each game, one player is in charge of the service. That is, they begin each point by tossing the ball into the air and then striking it at their opponent. After each game, service is passed from one player to the next.
Rally – The name given to the group of shots that comprise a point. A rally always starts with a serve and ends when one of the players wins the point.
Tennis terms
Serve – A player standing behind the baseline tosses the ball into the air to hit with a racket before it hits the ground. The ball must then fly above the net and pitch into the opposing service area. The ball then travels further so that the opposing player can hit it. This is known as a serve. Importantly, while serving to each other, the players must stand diagonally on the court. Every game’s first serve must come from the right side of the court.
Ace – Ace A correct serve is considered an ace if the opponent’s racket is unable to hit and return the ball.
Deuce – When both players have scores of 40, the game is called Deuce.
Advantage – The next point won by a player after deuce receives an advantage point. It is equivalent to one game point. If the opponent breaks this point on the next serve, they return to deuce.
Game point – The final point of a game is referred to as the game point.
Set point – Set Point The final point of the game in which the player serves to win the set.
Break point – The last point of a game won by the opposing player while the other serves.
