Summary

The novel starts with one of the most beautiful lines in English Literature that is –“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”. Mrs. Bennet appears to be thinking this as she sets her sights on the recently arrived Bingley, who she believes will make an excellent spouse for one of her daughters. Bingley is immediately taken with the lovely and shy Jane at a ball. His pal Darcy had a less pleasant encounter with Elizabeth. Despite the fact that they are both intrigued by each other, Austen reverses the convention of first impressions: Darcy is aloof due to his pride of rank and fortune and prejudice against Elizabeth’s family’s social inferiority, while Elizabeth is aloof due to her pride of self-respect and prejudice against Darcy’s snobbery.

Collins arrives shortly after, intending to marry one of the Bennet sisters. Mrs. Bennet pushes him toward Elizabeth, but she declines his marriage proposal. Instead, he marries Charlotte, a friend of hers. Elizabeth meets the attractive Wickham during this time. He informs her that Darcy has denied him his fortune because of their mutual attraction.

Following Bingley’s hasty departure for London, Elizabeth’s antipathy for Darcy grows as she suspects him of undermining Bingley’s connection with Jane. Darcy, on the other hand, has grown to admire Elizabeth’s brilliance and vitality. Elizabeth meets Darcy while visiting Charlotte, who declares his love for her and proposes. When Darcy demands an explanation, Elizabeth accuses him of splitting up Jane and Bingley and denying Wickham his inheritance. Darcy then writes Elizabeth a letter in which he explains that he split up with Jane because he didn’t think she reciprocated Bingley’s passion. He also reveals that after squandering his money, Wickham attempted to marry Darcy’s then 15-year-old sister in order to acquire her estate. Elizabeth begins to see Darcy in a different light as a result of these insights.

Conclusion

Lydia, the youngest Bennet sibling, marries Wickham shortly after. Elizabeth is alarmed by the news, as the scandalous affair—which is unlikely to end in marriage—could jeopardise the other Bennet sisters’ reputations. Darcy persuades Wickham to marry Lydia by promising him money when she tells him. Despite Darcy’s best efforts to keep his intervention hidden, Elizabeth discovers his deeds. Bingley returns, and he and Jane become engaged, thanks to Darcy’s persuasion. Finally, Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, who accepts this time.
