List of Lieutenant Governors & Administrators for Union Territories

India now has 28 states and eight union territories. India’s two newest union territories are Ladakh and Jammu Kashmir. There are two types of governments in India. There are two levels of government: the federal government and the state governments. The federal government is in charge of the entire country, while the state governments are in charge of their own states. In India, there are also union territories. They are not administered by state governments. These union areas are overseen by the president, who is assisted by a council of ministers and a lieutenant governor.

The Union Territories:-

The union territories are administrative entities in India that are handled by the Indian union government and do not have their own governments or areas. In India, there are now eight reunion territories.

The statute amending the constitution establishes Pondicherry and Delhi as union territories with their own legislatures. There are ministerial councils and chief ministers in both of these union territories.

Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Lakshadweep Islands, Ladakh, and Pondicherry are the current eight union territories of India. Former union territories that are now states include Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.

The Lieutenant Governor and Council of Ministers:-

The president of India is in charge of all of India’s union territories. The president then picks an administrator for each union territory, known as the lieutenant governor. The lieutenant governor normally serves a 5-year tenure. The union territories are governed differently than Delhi, Pondicherry, Jammu, and Kashmir. They have their own legislative and ministerial council.

In the administration of these union territories, the lieutenant governor has few responsibilities. The lieutenant governor, on the other hand, has more influence and power in union territories such as Ladakh and the Andaman Nicobar Islands, and is the leader of both the administration and the state. The rest of the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and the Lakshadweep islands are governed by an administrator, not a lieutenant governor or a council of ministers.

The Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) are the most common candidates for these positions. There has, however, been an exception to the rule. Dadara and Nagar Haveli, as well as Daman and Diu, have been administered by Praful Khoda Patel, a politician rather than an IAS or IPS officer. Following the death of Dineshwar Sharma, Praful Khoda Patel was named administrator of the Lakshadweep islands. This rule does have one exception.

Since 1985, the governor of Punjab has served as the ex-officio administrator for the union territory of Chandigarh. He was also a politician before becoming an IAS or IPS officer.

The Union Territories with Lieutenant Governor:-

There is no legislative assembly or council of ministers on the islands of the Andaman and Nicobar. Devendra Kumar Joshi, who started office on November 8, 2017, is the lieutenant governor’s name. Ram Nath Kovind appointed Devendra Kumar Singh as President of India on July 25, 2017, and he has been in office since.

In contrast to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Delhi, India’s capital, is a union territory. A legislative assembly and a ministerial council are also located in Delhi. Pranab Mukherjee, India’s last president, named Anil Baijal as the current lieutenant governor of Delhi. Since December 31, 2016, he has served as lieutenant governor of Delhi. Lieutenant governors manage the administration of the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Pondicherry as well.

The Union Territories with Administrators:-

The union territories with administrators are shown below.

Chandigarh: Banwarilal Purohit is the current administrator of Chandigarh.

Dadara and Nagar Haveli, as well as Daman and Diu, are administered by Praful Khoda Patel. Praful Khoda Patel is also in charge of the administration of the islands of Lakshadweep.

The President of India appointed all of these administrators.

Special Provision for Delhi:-

Delhi-Specific Provisions

The 69th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1991 gave the Union Territory of Delhi a special status and renamed it the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Article 239AA).

In addition, the administrator of Delhi has been renamed lieutenant governor (lt.).

For Delhi, it also established a legislative assembly and a council of ministers.

Conclusion:-

Because of the existence of Union Territories, many critics have deemed India to be a semi-federal country, with separate legislatures for the central and state governments. Because of their constitutional origin and evolution, India’s Union Territories have particular rights and status. As a result, Union Territories play a significant role in our country’s administrative jurisdiction.
