Some of India’s most important honours
Here are some of India’s most important honours:
1. Bharat Ratna (Civilian Award)
Since this award was given to Satyajit Ray, we can look back and see that it did justice to C.V. Raman’s huge efforts to learn about science as well.
Mother Teresa was given the Bharat Ratna after she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Amartya Sen also got this award a year after winning the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1997.
In 2008, this award was given to Bhimsen Joshi for his work in music. In 1992, this award was also given to JRD Tata, a very successful businessman.
2. Padma Vibhushan
India’s second-highest civilian award is the Padma Vibhushan. The award was started in 1954 and goes to anyone who has done “exceptional and distinguished service,” no matter their caste, creed, sex, or religion.
This is given to people who have done “service in any field, including service as a government employee.” This includes doctors and scientists, but not people who work in the public sector.
3. Padma Bhushan
The Padma Bhushan is India’s third most important civilian award.. This award, too, began in 1954. It is given to people of any race, job, position, or sex who have done “distinguished service of a high order.”
4. Padma Shri
The Padma Shri is India’s fourth most important civilian award. Every Republic Day, the Indian government gives it out. It is given to people who have made a big difference in art, science, literature, education, industry, sports, medicine, social work, industry, or social studies.
5. Param Vir Chakra (Gallantry Award)
This award was given out for the first time in 1947, but it wasn’t made official until 1950. The President of India gives it to the armed cadets (military or gallantry).
Here are the rules: “most notable bravery, some act of courage, or supreme sacrifice in the face of the enemy on land, at sea, or in the air.”
The award is called “Wheel of the Ultimate Brave” in English. This award is just as important as the United States’ Medal of Honour and the United Kingdom’s Victoria Cross.
6. Ashoka Chakra
This is India’s highest military honour for peacetime. It was created in 1954 and is given to people who have shown bravery or selflessness on the battlefield.
7. Mahavir Chakra Award in India
After the Param Vir Chakra, this is the second-highest award for bravery. It was first given out in 1950. This award goes to people who have done very brave things in the face of the enemy on land, in the air, or at sea.
During the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, this award was given to 11 Indian Air Force officers at one point.
