The Indian Navy Vessel Vela known as INS Vela was deployed on Nov 25th, 2021, as the 4th of 6 stealthy Scorpene-class submarines within Project 75. This one will join the West Navy Unit’s fleet of the submarine, adding to the unit’s array of weapons. The other submarines that are under project 75 are INS Karanj, INS kalvary and INS Khanderi which are already commissioned in the Indian naval fleet. The INS vela the scorpene class submarine was built by the Indian Mazagon Dock Ship Builders working along with the naval group of France.
The meaning of INS vela is vigilant, a victorious one, a valiant one. The name of Vela has been given to this ship after a ship whose name was also vela was decommissioned in 2010.
What are scorpene class submarines?
Submarines of the Scorpene class are exceptionally powerful vehicles. They feature improved stealth characteristics and yet are armed with anti-ship weapons and also manoeuvred torpedoes having very long ranges. Those submarines contain a cutting-edge SONAR as well as sensing package, allowing for exceptional operating capabilities. Such submarine propelling motor is an improved motor known as (PERMASYN) (Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Motor).
Speaking about INS vela, it has carried the Make-In-India ethic a step further by using indigenous battery packs to drive a whisper-quiet, PERMASYN. The development of the submersible vehicle, which is being overseen by MDL’s in-house designing supervising team, naval experts of the SOT (Submarine Overseeing Team), SDG (Submarine Design Group), as well as IIT (Indian Training Team) training personnel, is a crucial step toward the Atmanirbhar Bharat. Following the rising acknowledgement of Chinese boats in the areas of the Indian Ocean, the Navy has prioritised modernizing its underwater vessel operations with its naval force.
The new INS Vela
The former Vela served for thirty-seven years and became the world’s longest-serving submarine when it was decommissioned on January 25th, 2010. She made numerous notable operational successes throughout her long and successful service, in addition to becoming a training facility for several naval officers. In its new form, the Vela is ready to carry out offensive actions throughout the whole range of naval combat. She is genuinely set for the attack after she has plunged, with outstanding speed and ferocity along with its stealth capability. Vela has been outfitted with cutting-edge weaponry and technologies. All of which are part of the Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System, short known as the SUBTICS system According to the navy, once a victim has been identified, the INS vela can choose to attack it with either its ocean weapons or her surface-to-surface missiles.
Characteristics of INS Vela
Vela measures 67.5 meters long & 12.3 meters high. The beams are 6.2 meters in length. It has an underwater maximum velocity of twenty knots around 37 km/h as well as a surface peak velocity of 11 knots, which is around 20 km/h. INS Vela is powered by 4 MTU 12V 396 SE84 engines that consume diesel as fuel and 360 rechargeable batteries, as well as permanently strong magnetic propelling motors. All technology within the pressure vessel is installed on vibration cradles for greater stealthiness, while the shell, tail, and inboards are engineered for the lowest submerged friction.
The submersible vehicle is capable of anti-submarine, anti-surface, military intelligence, minefield planting, and zone monitoring assault missions throughout the whole range of naval equipment. INS Vela has C303 torpedo prevention and mitigation device and therefore can deploy 18 torpedoes, anti-ship Exocet weapons, or 30 landmines in replacement of the torpedoes.
Summary
To sum up, INS vela stand for Indian Naval Ship Vela which is named after a previous INS vela which was decommissioned in 2010. This new INS vela was deployed in the Indian navy on Nov 25th 2021. INS vela are stealth, advanced technology equipped submarines designed under project 75. This submarine is also a scorpene class submarine, the scorpene class submarine are very dangerous and powerful submarine that have advanced stealth technologies, various sensors onboard, and heavy operational capabilities along with a long-range of warfare equipment. The INS vela are equipped with a SUBTICS system to deal with its target, along with PERMASYN motors for its propulsion with a cutting-edge SONAR system. The engine used in INS vela are four diesel engines along with 360 batteries and it also has its hull and fins designed to provide stealth to the submarine.
