List of nuclear power plants in India

In India, there is a total of 22 nuclear power plants operational and many more are under construction. The first nuclear power plant in India was Rajasthan Atomic Power Station which started operations in 1966. The largest nuclear power plant in India is the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant which has a capacity of 2000 MW.

Rajasthan Automic Power Plant:

The Rajasthan Atomic Power Station is the first nuclear power plant in India. It is located at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan. The plant has two units with a total capacity of 540 MW. The first unit of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station was commissioned in 1973 and the second unit was commissioned in 1981.

Tarapur Atomic Power Plant, Maharashtra:

The Tarapur Atomic Power Plant is located in Tarapur, Maharashtra. The plant has two units with a total capacity of 1400 MW. The first unit of the Tarapur Atomic Power Plant was commissioned in 1969 and the second unit was commissioned in 1973.

Narora Atomic Power Plant, Uttar Pradesh:

The Narora Atomic Power Plant is located in Bulandshahar district, Uttar Pradesh. The plant has two units with a total capacity of 440 MW. The first unit of the Narora Atomic Power Plant was commissioned in 1991 and the second unit was commissioned in 1992.

Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant, Gujrat:

The Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant is located in the Vadodara district, Gujarat. The plant has two units with a total capacity of 540 MW. The first unit of the Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant was commissioned in 1993 and the second unit was commissioned in 2005.

Kundankulam Nuclear Power Plant:

The nuclear power plant at Kudankulam is the largest nuclear power plant in India with a capacity of 2000 MW. The plant is located in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The first unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant was commissioned in 2013 and the second unit is under construction.

Kalapakkam Nuclear Power Plant, Tamil Nadu:

The nuclear power plant at Kalapakkam is located in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. The plant has two units with a total capacity of 540 MW. The first unit of the Kalapakkam Nuclear Power Plant was commissioned in 1984 and the second unit was commissioned in 2000.

Kaiga Nuclear Power plant, Karnataka:

The nuclear power plant at Kaiga is located in the Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka. The plant has four units with a total capacity of 1080 MW. The first unit of the Kaiga Generating Stations was commissioned in 2000 and the second unit was commissioned in 2011.

Nuclear power plants play an important role in the electricity generation mix of India as they contribute about 11% of the total electricity generation in the country. With the rapid growth of the economy, the demand for electricity in India is increasing at a rapid pace.
