Syllabus Of GATE EE

It is very important for the students who want to appear in the GATE exam to be aware of the entire syllabus so that they do not miss out on any important topic.

Given below is the list of subjects which constitute the syllabus of GATE EE:-

Subjects

Marks Distribution

Engineering Mathematics

13 marks

Signals and Systems

8 marks

Electric circuits

8-9 marks

Electromagnetic Fields

4-5 marks

Electrical and Electronic Measurements

4 marks

Analog and Digital Electronics

10-12 marks

Control Systems

8-9 marks

Electrical Machines

10-12 marks

Power Systems

10-12 marks

Power Electronics

10 marks

Note:- General Aptitude is also a part of this syllabus representing 15 marks out of which you can easily score 11-12 marks. There is no need for much preparation for general aptitude, just go through previous year questions and that is enough.

Engineering Mathematics

There are almost 5 important topics that have been covered under this subject. You need to give this subject around 10 days.

  • Linear Algebra: You should know the various types of matrices and how to inverse, reduce, transpose, etc. Eigenvalue is a very important concept. Revise it in half a day and solve previous year questions in 1.5 days
  • Calculus: 2 to 3 days
  • Differential Equation: You should know both the methods of solving linear differential equations (complementary function and Particular integral), etc.
  • Probability
  • Complex Variable
  • Fourier & Laplace

Signals and Systems

Your basics related to this subject must be very clear such as the various types of signals like unit step signal, etc.; various types of systems like linear systems. Questions are mostly asked in the GATE related to the basic part of this signal and system. Mostly questions are asked from fourier series, fourier transform, laplace transform, Z transform, DTFT. This given topic is a very scoring topic in signals and systems. We need to have a clear conceptual understanding on that topic.

After having a clear conceptual understanding, mesmerizing the formulae is given importance. And then after attempting the previous year questions, you will easily be able to attempt the related questions in the GATE EE exam. If you have prepared well for that topic, then you will be able to secure or score at least 26-27 marks out of 35 marks. You have to give just 10 – 12 days to revise this part.

Network Analysis

In this subject, you don’t need to go through the theory part. You Just need to focus on practicing the previous year’s questions. You have to give two days only to revise or cover this part for GATE EE.

Electro-Magnetic  Field Theory

You can apply the mathematical calculus here that you have already studied in mathematics. Besides that, you can go through Faraday’s law, the Maxwell Equation as well. You have to allot only two days to cover this subject. Solve the previous year question for this part as well. This way, you can easily attempt the related questions.

Electrical and Electronic Measurement

You need to give this subject only two days to complete. Focus only on solving the previous year question for this part.

Control Systems

You need to give this subject only three days to complete. You can read certain things like how to find nodes, through which criteria we can find stability, etc. If you have well prepared this much, you can easily score at least 45- 50 marks out of 68 marks.

Other Subjects

Now, the remaining subjects left such as machine, power system, power electronic, analog and digital. All these parts cover a weightage of around 32 marks in the GATE exam. If you have already studied the topics mentioned above , then it is well and good. But if you have not, then you should cover only the selected topics. There is no need to go through all the topics if you are lacking in time. Like from analog subjects, you can cover or revise the DC analysis, transistor, and diode. From the machine subject, you need to revise the topics like transformers (from this, 2 marks question is asked), numericals of DC, induction machine, etc. From the Power System, you have to cover only Fault Analysis, stability, and Economic Load dispatch. For the Power system topic, you have to give only 2 days. It covers the weightage of 7 – 8 marks. In power electronics, You need to go through characteristics of power devices: Rectifier (Highly inductive one phase full wave rectifier and Half wave rectifier and resistive), Chopper (go through only analysis part, this topic consists of four marks), Inverter, etc.

Conclusion

To achieve the score of 60+ marks in GATE in a span of one month, you need to prepare very strategically. The basic strategy has been shared above (which can be summarized as- for getting 60+ marks in one month, first cover the important subjects like signal and system, math, network, electro-magnetic field theory, control) as these part covers the majority part of the question paper in GATE EE exam. Around 68 marks are asked from these parts in GATE and if you prepare well for these parts only, then the chances of getting good marks in GATE is high. Also, go through the selected parts of remaining subjects like power system, power electronic, machine, Analog and digital, etc. At last, you need to solve the previous year’s solution for each subject.
