DigiLocker is a safe, secure and convenient cloud service developed by the Government of India under the Digital India initiative. It is a mobile application (Android/iOS) that allows individuals to store their physical documents, such as PAN cards, passports, driving licences, etc., in the cloud and retrieve them on-demand digitally or physically.
We can access digitally signed documents by DigiLocker. DigiLocker documents are digitally signed by issuing authority and can be accessed securely from anywhere with an Internet connection. The DigiLocker documents’ online storage facility supplies confidentiality, security, safety and accuracy in quick document retention processing.
Digitally signed documents:
Digitally signed documents can help businesses or individuals take two or more important steps to protect their intellectual property and safeguard data integrity.
Digital signatures assure authentication and trust in people’s documents. The Digital Signature provides a privacy tool to enhance data security by re-using a single key to protect multiple related records. It is a better method than encrypting which requires encryption keys for each record, whereas subject to key loss, digital signatures can be used repeatedly without affecting data security.
DigiLocker is a cloud-based digital locker that allows people to store and access their documents anytime. The DigiLocker DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) service, available for citizens across the country, provides a legally valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). It also allows people to apply for DSC associated with any document listed in the Digital Locker. The DigiLocker digital signature certificates can be transferred from one device to another and will continue to be valid up until the validity period. According to the Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and Service Provider Rules, 2010, a DigiLocker user can transfer or share Import and Export DSCs with any other person or entity.
Accordingly, DigiLocker users can have multiple documents signed under a single DSC, which acts as an identifier for each document.
About DigiLocker:
DigiLocker is a secure service provided by the government of India. It allows users to store their documents in the cloud. Documents are digitally signed by issuing authority and can be accessed securely from anywhere with an Internet connection. DigiLocker has been integrated with e-Governance initiatives like Digital India, UIDAI, PAN card project etc.
DigiLocker can be accessed via a direct open URL link, a mobile app using QR code or scans of the document. DigiLocker documents can be used in all Government organisations or other entities easily.
DigiLocker is an initiative of the Government of India under the Digital India program.
Prime Minister (present) first launched the service in September 2014 in Delhi, through which one could upload any document (physical or digital) to DigiLocker. In January 2015, it was integrated with the PAN card project. A citizen could apply for a new PAN card online and transfer all documents to DigiLocker, increasing convenience for citizens and eliminating the need to carry physical documents.
Currently, the service is provided by various government departments/agencies and can be accessed from their websites.
DigiLocker has also been integrated into e-Governance initiatives like Digital India.
At present, it is available only to Indian citizens.
People access their documents through their registered email ID and password.
One can share the link with others if required, and this will automatically generate a QR code for the given document, which can be used to access it.
DigiLocker currently supports only Android mobile devices. The iOS version is in development. It allows one to scan documents such as PAN card, passport, driving licence, etc. and upload them to a DigiLocker account in the cloud digitally or physically using a smartphone camera.
Secure Sharing of Digital Documents in DigiLocker:
Digital documents in DigiLocker allow users to share a document with another person or entity. The sender will digitally sign the document before sharing it with the recipient, and the recipient can view it but cannot make any changes to it or save it. This option is available for free to registered users. DigiLocker can provide high security against malicious attacks because the digital signature digital locker keeps the documents safe in a multi-layered approach, with most of its components built on Indian Government Standard (IS), National Security Council Rules for the Protection of Classified and Sensitive Information (NSCS) 2000 and ISO 27001. This ensures that only the genuine document can be accessed by anyone who has permission.
Conclusion:
DigiLocker is a secure cloud-based digital locker created by C-DAC (formerly i2CoP), which offers an online storage facility for business and personal documents for individuals and organisations. Data can be accessed between any two devices connected to the internet. A unique signature code is used in digitally signed documents. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) provides a line of defence for documents. The government’s initiative is to provide more security and privacy to citizens. DSC has some limitations, and DSC holders must use the same means to safeguard their documents from other individuals.
