In the Republic of India, a chief minister is the head of government of each state out of the 28 states and sometimes a union territory. According to the Constitution of India, the Governor is a state’s head, but de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister.
The governor appoints and swears in the chief minister, whose council of ministers is collectively responsible to the assembly.

Yogi Adityanath of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been serving as the incumbent chief minister since March 19, 2017.
His 52-member team includes two deputy chief ministers, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak. Sixteen other cabinet ministers, 14 ministers of state (independent charge) and 20 ministers of state were also sworn in by governor Anandiben Patel.
 Twenty-one ministers of the previous Yogi Adityanath government have been included, and 22 have been dropped. Thirty-one new faces in the Yogi government also feature five women.
Adityanath is the 33rd chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is the first CM of Uttar Pradesh to win a second consecutive term after completing a full five-year tenure.

On 26 January 1950, Govind Ballabh Pant, Premier of United Provinces, became the first Chief Minister of the newly renamed Uttar Pradesh. He had a tenure of 4 years and 335 days, from 20 May 1952 to 27 December 1954.
He belonged to the Bareilly constituency.Â
Next on the list of chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh comes Sampurnanand. He had a tenure of 5 years and 344 days, from 28 December 1954 to 6 December 1960.Â
Chandra made a place on the UP minister list on7 December 1960 and had a tenure of 2 years and 298 days, up to 1 October 1963. He came back on 18 February 1970 and lasted up to 225 days.
Sucheta Kripalini was the next person that got elected on 2 October 1963 and lasted up to 13 March 1967, which is a tenure of 3 years and 162 days

Conclusion
The chief minister is elected through a majority in the state legislative assembly. This is procedurally established by the vote of confidence in the legislative assembly, as suggested by the state governor, who is the appointing authority. They are elected for five years. The chief minister shall hold office during the pleasure of the governor.
Since, according to the constitution, the chief minister is appointed by the governor, the swearing-in is done before the governor of the state.
