History and date of formation of Indian states since 1947

India had more than 500 provinces and princely kingdoms at the time of independence. Partition came with freedom. Several Indian provinces were partitioned under British control.

Bengal was one of the most important provinces to be sliced in half. Eastern Bengal was annexed by Pakistan, while Western Bengal remained part of India.
